I enjoyed Dark City, but I thought it could have been much better. It seemed like they were doing a really good job of creating a mystery... and then, about fifteen minutes into the movie, you get to see all the bad guys and know exactly what they're up to. I thought that was horrid. Terrible idea. That film had the opportunity to be a sci-fi version of Memento and completely missed the opportunity. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed watching it. I just feel like it could have been a lot more.

My pics for underrated films:

Amistad. The fact that this film got passed over for acadamy awards was criminal. Djimon Hounsou was amazing in it and Anthony Hopkins wasn't bad, either.

There are a handful of films that I feel are venerated amongst nerds that really should have recived greater renown. Films that people say, "You haven't seen that!? Holy crap. We're watching that tonight..." If you can say that about a film, then it was underrated. Usually. I would include on that list:
  • American Psycho - Christian Bale at his finest.
  • Office Space - Still relevant today in 2009 to anyone working in corporate America even though the main character was working to fix the Y2K bug.
  • Shortbus - While the critics loved this film, it didn't get much play because it has a lot of sex in it, most of it gay sex. It's the only film I've ever seen that uses sex to tell a story. If you can make it past the opening sequence, it's worth watching.
  • Sunshine - I really think this film should take its place amongst some of the great scifi films of all time. It starts with the same classic premise as Alien, 2001 and several others: A ship. A crew. A signal.
  • Pitch Black - The sequal was a big steaming pile of suck, but the original was actually a really good scifi film.
  • The Libertine - Take Jack Sparrow, make him a more serious character, obsess him with sex, and make him a British nobleman instead of a pirate and you start to get this film. If you like Depp, you'll love it.
  • The Ninth Gate - Sometimes, it can be really cool to watch Johnny Depp play a normal guy.
  • Gangs of New York - I mention it here because it got nominated for tons of awards in 2003 and won none of them. Fucking Chicago won out over Gangs and The Pianist. Daniel Day-Lewis' role as Bill the Butcher got beat out by Adrian Brody which was totally gay. Brody gave a good performance, but he didn't transform himself the way Day-Lewis did.
  • Big Trouble in Little China - Don't even diss it. I will fuck you the fuck up. So will half of foh.

Wow do I disagree with a lot of people here. I saw In Bruges on a whim and expected it to be very lame but it was actually alright, but best film evar rly?

I really like The Ten but I have a man crush on Paul Rudd's sense of humor. Really the whole thing makes me laugh. So much.

Pretty much agree with these except punch drunk love. Wasn't moonlight mile some chick flick with gyllenhall?

There's a chic aspect to it, but it's him returning to his gfs home after his girlfriend has been murdered.

In Bruges was pretty damn good, finally watched it after this thread. Think I downloaded it way back when the other thread about it started but never actually watched it.

The Ten is another pretty under rated movie yea. I hadn't even heard of it until my brother brought it over one day.

It isn't totally a flop, and might carry some popularity, but I genuinely enjoyed Southland Tales. Sure, I go nearly insane every time I watch it, but that is a good thing right?

Event Horizon, and no, I'm not kidding. Great movie blending horror and sci-fi.

Rules of Attraction is great.

If anything I would say that Boondock Saints is overrated, not under. It's a good movie and all, but some people are downright fanatical about it.

Sunshine is so incredibly underrated. It's one of the best sci-fi movies I've ever seen. if not THE best.

Secret Window is underrated.

I'm pretty sure that Southland Tales is considered a flop. I just don't see how any regular people could enjoy that movie, given it takes a couple of viewings and some internet searching to appreciate it.

I think it's pretty entertaining with some good laughs.

Dark City goes without mentioning.

I know Stephen Sommers has done terrible things to mankind with his movies, but Deep Rising is an enjoyable low budget Aliens knockoff; much like Dark City & The Matrix, it was overshadowed by Deep Blue Sea.

I also know that Renny Harlin has done terrible things to mankind, but I seem to be the only person that enjoyed The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

I honestly think Armed and Dangerous is one of John Candy's better movies.

I tried to like it, I really did. I went into it with good expectations, having really liked Donnie Darko. Southland Tales is just a terrible movie.
