Planet Earth Bluray Set

Make sure you click the little radial button for the bluray version, since regular dvd and bluray versions are on the same page.
Back up to $59.99. That's what I get for waiting an extra day. Had it up last night but didn't pull the trigger. The $5 coupon still works though.

Of course, if you are stuck on some pixels out of place on a forty year old film...well there is no helping you.
I generally agree with you, but now that the new Blu-Ray commercials are touting 'Perfect Sound. Perfect Audio.' they need to deliver for the most part, especially on new releases.

Bottom line is that, while I may not be an audiophile or a videophile, I know when I'm being screwed. When you add 15 bucks to the cost it better damn well be worth it, and when they put out shitty transfers it just slows adoption which slows price decreases for all.

Yup! I agree exactly.

BTW, I wonder how many people go out and buy a BR and plug it into their SD TV with composite cables. Honestly my parents would probably do shit like that. They just don't get it, not that they're dumb at all, they just don't follow technology. When I got my mom her first laptop she kept asking me "but where does the data go?" like she didn't get the HD was in the laptop itslef.

Thanks for the info on the 120htz, thats what I thought- next TV will replace my 32" olivea as my 'main' TV as the olivea goes to our den and start makeing it an actual den...or the 32 goes to the bedroom and the 26 goes to the den- whatever.

I look forward to LOTR BlueRay- I hope they dont wait till the hobbit (if/when? or is it for sure now?)

BlueRay on a SDTV with component...well it can atleast be progressive and not interlaced :-) lol

I agree that while blueray discs are starting to level out and not always be 15+ more than DVD- that is a good thing...but there still should be a deff quality differance between the two.

The David Attenborough (BBC) narrated version is worth paying $60 fullprice even over a $5 Sigourney Weaver narrated version. Sir D.A. has pretty much committed his entire life to this stuff. Its in a completely different league than an actress' voiceover.

David Attenborough - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You want this version:
Amazon.com: Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series [Blu-ray]: David Attenborough: Movies & TV

Has anyone gotten to watch Children of Men on Blu Ray? Once I saw that movie I knew it would be the first thing I ever bought if I had a Blu Ray player.

Amazon.com: Children of Men [Blu-ray]: Michael Caine, Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Pam Ferris, Peter Mullan, Alfonso CuarĂ³n: Movies & TV

It's REALL SUPER COOL for the first 10 seconds of the first time you do it. Watch the opening race in Disneys "Cars" with it on, it is fucking amazing, looks like the track and cars are really in 3d. The instant the race is over.... it looks fake, like everyone said.

They had Pirates otC3 on at BestBuy yesterday with a 120hz TV going, and fuck, it looked soooooooo cheesy and fake. Yeah, its a rad technology, but it's just totally jarring to see.

I am a AV enthusiast... I don't consider myself a -phile or a purist at all. I am a consumer and just enjoy a loud boom and a big screen. But, I am guessing that you can't apply 120hz interpolation to a 60hz movie and have it look real. And AFAIK, all BRD's and HD movies are still in 60hz, regardless of the resolution.

Correct me if I am wrong any of you videophiles, but if you were to do a movie in true 120hz, you'd have to film it with twice the amount of flim at double the recording speed, and then the BluRay would be twice the size in terms of memory, right? Since you have twice as many frames now.

I am assuming if that was the case, a 120hz movie wouldn't look so fake, since you're seeing real frames, twice as many as you are used to. But the way it is now, it just interpolates the intermediate frames from a composite of the frames before and after it.

This is just my laymens guess, I could be totally off, since I know hertz != framerate. As I understand it, movies are 24fps anyways?

Yeah, and I don't understand why it's so difficult. If you try to explain to people what a "resolution" is and why BR/HD content looks better, their eyes just glaze over. Pixels are a pretty fucking simple concept to understand, but yet 95% of the public can't seem to handle it.

Not knowing all the terminology and standards and formats, fine. But not being able to understand why 1280x720 is better than 720x480, or what they mean?

I almost submitted the order at Discovery and then remember it was the one by Weaver and I was like fuck that bitch the BBC guy is miles better and worth the extra $$. It still behooves me why Discovery shelled out the extra cash for Weaver. It was a big waste of money.

I like this guy even more now...from the wikipedia article
Quote:
In a December 2005 interview with Simon Mayo on BBC Radio Five Live, Attenborough stated that he considers himself an agnostic.[27] When asked whether his observation of the natural world has given him faith in a creator, he generally responds with some version of this story:

My response is that when Creationists talk about God creating every individual species as a separate act, they always instance hummingbirds, or orchids, sunflowers and beautiful things. But I tend to think instead of a parasitic worm that is boring through the eye of a boy sitting on the bank of a river in West Africa, [a worm] that's going to make him blind. And [I ask them], 'Are you telling me that the God you believe in, who you also say is an all-merciful God, who cares for each one of us individually, are you saying that God created this worm that can live in no other way than in an innocent child's eyeball? Because that doesn't seem to me to coincide with a God who's full of mercy'.[28]
