A movie based on an anime doesn't have to be bad. I'm skeptical. It could be good like the most recent batman movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was an abomination instead. More often than not the these adaptations have too much in common with the many vapid movie sequels that shamelessly milk a particular franchise and its fan base for money.

No way Keanu could pull off a character as charismatic as Spike.

I'm picturing spike and i'm picturing Keanu. Thats just not a good match at all, Spike is fluid, laid back, and smooth. I've never scene Keanu act in a manner that in any way resembles Spike.

Constantine wasn't exactly rigid.

Yeah but he doesn't have that care free acting ability at all it seems. Even in that stupid baseball movie where he's trying to be the lighthearted coach eventually he's pretty stiff. It's a good 'hey this guy can sort of look like him' move, but a horrible 'can play this part' decision

I didn't think he did a particularly good job as Ne...I mean, Constantine.

He'd be terrible as Spike.

Hardball wasn't a "lighthearted" coach at all. That movie was just terrible all around.

Reeves can be looser than a lot of you think, he's been given a lot of 'hardass' roles since Speed but that isn't exactly where he started.

Let's hope not.

Really, 'Spike' is not the toughest role for any actor to play. I mean the largest requirement is to be able to move fluidly which can't be that hard to teach. Keanu has done some heavy martial arts in the past so he looks like a pretty good candidate.

Handling Spike's deadpan would not be a problem for him.

No. Keanu Reeves is awful at fight scenes. He would be a disaster as Spike.

He has no fluidity whatsoever; the only fight scene where he looked at all acceptable was when he was fighting Seraph in the second Matrix movie, and that's because Collin Chou is awesome.

It isn't all about the fight scenes. I just can't picture Keanu as Spike, like many have already said. It seems like it would be a somewhat challenging acting job, his emotions aren't always so obvious and it will take a level of subtlety to sell it with a human and not a cartoon.

Because you asked for it... Keanu Reeves to play Spike Spiegel in COWBOY BEBOP! (Updated) -- Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

Quote:
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Up front, I am not particularly well-versed in anime, so I am the exact wrong person to write this up. I hope Scott Green can come in and spruce up this posting with an actual informed opinion, but I figured I should at least get the conversation started.

Keanu Reeves will topline 20th Century Fox's big screen adaptation of the very popular COWBOY BEBOP series. A relative unknown screenwriter, Peter Craig, is attached to pen the adaptation with Sunrise Inc. (original anime producers) working closely with Fox on the adaptation.

Reeves will play bounty hunter Spike Spiegel.

That's what I know. Maybe it's super great casting, but even though I have no idea what the source material is like, I have a feeling that there might be some... uneasy feelings about this. Right or wrong?

Scott Green here,
The character of Spike Spiegel is that of a noir, tragic hero crossed with an embodiment of Bruce Lee's "like water," with a healthy dose of Monkey Punch's not-so gentlemanly gentleman thief Lupin III. He's haunted by how his previous life within a crime syndicate ended, but he also has full of primal mischief.
A favorite scene from the episode "Gateway Shuffle" involves his partner, ex-cop Jet Black holding a suspect believed to be connected to an ecoterrorist bio-weapon, while speaking to an old contact via video-conference. Meanwhile Spike's found a strange vial. He begins trying to twist it open. He puts it on the ground and begins stomping on it. The suspect really starts sweating. Finally, Spike places it on a shelf, pulls his gun out and shoots off the outer casing.

For the most part, the character has an oceanic disposition; fluid with a lot doing on below the surface.

According to Variety Peter Craig will script the film. Sunrise's Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe will serve as associate producers alongside series writer Keiko Nobumoto.

Erwin Stoff will be producing and Joshua Long has been named executive producer.

There's talk that the script is based on the anime's first episode "Asteroid Blues," concerning a the "Red Eye" drug, which speeds up the perception of the user.

*

Because it's ridiculous to expect any perfect anime to film cast translation, my pick for Spike Spiegel is The Long Goodbye era Elliott Gould.
