What the fuck is with the Tombstone love? Its ok but pretty much only because of Val Kilmer, its trite and routine. Best western ever? Far, far from it, hell even django is better.

If we are to add italian westerns to the mix, what about The Great Silence?

I'll have to check that out. I never saw it before. Thanks.

You really liked that movie that much? I have seen it on "all time best western" lists before but I thought it was almost unbearable to sit through. I'm not dissing Sergio Leone, but even The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was long as hell and paced slowly, and Once Upon A Time in the West was a lot worse. Sometimes I think people just list all the spaghetti westerns by default on these lists when IMO TGTB&TU was the only one that would crack my top 10.

I am with you on the Magnificent 7 though, that is #1 on my list.

So I bit the bullet and registered to the AFI site to get to see the criteria for the list. Here we go:
Quote:
FEATURE-LENGTH FICTION FILMS
Narrative format, typically over 60 minutes in length.
AMERICAN FILM
English-language film with significant creative and/or production elements from the United States. Additionally, only films released before January 1, 2008 will be considered.
CRITICAL RECOGNITION
Formal commendation in print, television and digital media.
MAJOR AWARD WINNER
Recognition from competitive events including awards from peer groups, critics, guilds and major film festivals.
POPULARITY OVER TIME
Including success at the box office, television and cable airing, and DVD/VHS
sales and rentals.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
A film’s mark on the history of the moving images through visionary narrative
devices, technical innovation, or other ground breaking achievements.
CULTURAL IMPACT
A film’s mark on American society in matters of style and substance.
So I guess that it was felt that Kubrick being an american was enough to make A Clockwork Orange eligible.

Clockwork Orange meets almost every criteria.

5. High Noon
6. The Magnificant 7
7. Once Upon a time in the West
8. High Planes Drifter
9. True Grit
10. Shane

11. Maybe Tombstone
If the list above is what you are proposing instead of the AFI one, its very good, but alot of those are not American. Hence why they are not part of the top 10. (As soon as I saw the AFI list didn't have The good, the bad and the ugly in it, I just went WAT!)
