But who the hell ever says he is a great actor??? Every single person says he plays the same role in every movie when he doesnt.

pacino and nicholson play the same character over and over again, it doesnt mean they they arent great. it just means they are sticking with what works. cruise is a great actor or at least was. but his public persona has fucked things up a lot.

No idea what to say. I always hear Pacino and Nicholson are great actors while Cruise can only play Tom Cruise.

I think the issue with guys like Pacino and Nicholson is because their unique persona is always overshadowing their character. They're good actors, but you can't help but forget their characters' names.

Hard to say that Johnny Depp is underrated since most people probably like him, but it's a fucking disgrace that the guy haven't received a Oscar yet so I will have to put him as under rated actor.
Donnie Wahlberg and Michael Pitt (Funny Games, The Village) are both underrated imo.

edit: Oh and have to add Patrick Swayze for his performance in Donnie Darko 8) (not really sure what happened to his career after Road House / Ghost / Dirty Dancing)

No one mentions him as underrated because he isnt. Hes a shakespearen trained actor. Probably the most talented / schooled actor the Star Trek series will ever get.

* To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) - Gregory Peck

Hard to complain about that one. Sucks hard when you have 2 or more worthy winners in a year, and years at a time when they all suck.

There's a huge huge difference between the characters Pacino plays and the characters Nicholson plays. Only the retarded can't tell the difference.

Pacino - Ocean's 13 and Scarface... not even remotely the same character
88 Minutes and Devil's Advocate... Again, not even remotely the same.

Nicholson - Wolf and The shining... Not even remotely the same
Few Good Men and Batman... Again, not even the same

That's just a couple of examples. All their characters are completely different from one to the other. Where people get off saying the characters they play are all the same... I don't know, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see not one of their characters are alike.

May pick up on the actual persons mannerisms but doesn't mean all their characters are the same.

Same with Tom Cruise, though I'll have to say Interview with the Vampire was a horrible movie.

Tom Cruise is not a great actor. The best review I ever read of him had to do with this disconnect between the audience and him in every movie he plays in due to his weird personality (which we come to see later in his legendary whacked out scientology rants). There is not one character Cruise has *ever* played that I felt any sense of connection with or cared about. He usually gets out acted by at least one (if not more) people in every movie he is in.
  1. Top Gun, you cared more for Goose than Maverick.
  2. Mission Impossible III: Philip Seymour Hoffman > Cruise.
  3. Last Samurai: The Japanese guy
  4. Mission Impossible II: Thandie Newton
  5. Jerry Maguire: Renee Zellweger & Cuba Gooding Jr were both better than he was. So was the cute nerdy kid with the glasses.
  6. Mission Impossible I: Probably the entire movie-->Join Voigt, Kristin Scott Thomas etc etc
  7. Days of Thunder: Robert Duval stole the movie
  8. A Few Good Men: Do I even need to say it?
  9. Rain Man: same as above
  10. Legend: Fuck, even Tim Curry was far more memorable than Cruise was...as the Satan Incarnate Overlord
  11. The Firm: Oh lets see...Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Gene Hackman
  12. Interview with the Vampire: He and Brad Pitt both get upstaged by a little girl played by Kirsten Dunst, but it was probably my favorite movie of his.

So that leaves what, Born on the 4th of July or some shit as his top movie where he isn't overshadowed by someone else? Ffs, some of the movies he plays in are enjoyable, but that doesn't mean to me that it makes him a great actor. I think other people have carried his movies, pretty much everything with Nicole Kidman (his fake Irish accent was so bad it hurt to watch) is in you can add to that list as well. If anything, I think he's done well in choosing scripts that hide his lack of acting and which he knows will be popular, which I guess you can't really blame the guy for. But I just can't think of any incredibly memorable performance by him where I thought "wow what a good actor", and on top of that I never give 2 shits for his character.
