The Hammer

I saw this movie this week end on DVD, had never heard of it before. The story is about a 40yo carpenter/construction worker that quits his job, and gets back into amateur boxing.
It was surprisingly good and funny for a "direct to dvd" movie (seems like the theater release was very limited). It's not the movie of the year, but it is good ; not pretentious, and doesn't try too hard to be funny, like most of the shitty "comedies" we usually get served.

I was wondering what happened to it. I saw the preview on Apple and was excited to see it but I guess it never made it to a theater about here. At least I can go out and rent it.

its adam corollas movie, he was part of the loveline show (not the doctor, the other dude) and also host of the man show and now hosts a early morning radio show on rock stations (one of the replacements for stern)

semi based on his real life from what i understand

Carolla, not Corolla. And I think all that's RL based is that he used to be a carpenter and he used to be a boxing instructor. But that's about it.

It was independently made and had virtually no advertising budget at all. That's why he went on Dancing with the Stars, for some pub. Apparently it was really well reviewed. 74% fresh on RT from normal critics, 77% from top critics, and 96% from the community. Though it was such a small release no one but Carolla fans really got to go see it, so that is definitely skewed.

Anyhoo, from all I've heard it's a great date movie, and funny in it's own right.

pretty decent movie considering it's half a rom-com. carolla plays himself basically which is pretty funny, few moments had some hearty lulz

just saw it last night with my girlfriend and it was better than i expected. more comedy/boxing than i thought there would be and some genuinely funny lines.
i really liked his little nicaraguan sidekick. the ending was a little sappy, but it didnt kill the rest of the movie.
7.5/10
