Dumplings (Gaau ji)

Been watching quite a few Asian movies lately that haven't been brought to the states and recently just came across this one called Dumplings that came out a few years back. Its Hong Kong produced, stars Bai Ling, and is the extended full length portion of a movie that originally has three different horror stories called Three Extremes. From what I have experienced so far the uniqueness in many of these movies is definitely lacking in most American films and its really refreshing to see some original ideas. This movie is no exception. Without giving away what becomes apparent preaty quickly, the premise is basically about a women looking to retain her youthful appearance to appeal to her husband by eating "special" dumplings. Check out the synopsis and reviews IMDB. Probably one of the more fetid movies I've seen in awhile, but its not really a horror movie per say. As someone said in one of their reviews, its clear why this would not translate well to American audiences. The concept is just too bizarre, taboo, culturally constrained, and I'm not so sure would appeal to most. Anyways, just throwing it out there for those looking for something different to watch. Its definitely something you wouldn't want to show your kids, so if that sounds appealing like it did for me, then definitely check it out. You can watch it here

I have never seen this one, but I can recommand two other movies by the same director (Fruit Chan): Made In Hong-Kong, a portrait of a group of teenagers trying to find a meaning to their lives, and The Longest Summer, cops becoming gangsters as Hong-Kong is given back to China.
