Street Kings 4/11

Fox Searchlight - Street Kings - Official Site

Hugh Laurie, Forrest Whitaker, The Game, AND Keanu Reeves all in the same film? Preview looked pretty badass.

That might be the worst movie website i have ever used.

oh yeah...

The movie is going to suck as well....

Any movie that has "the game" on the same title page as Keanu Reaves will suck

I would agree that the website is one of the single worst uses of Flash I've ever seen. I hate Flash as a general rule, it's a crutch used by people who suck at web design--but that site is a fucking abomination that goes way beyond that. You'd think that they'd at least have a decent quality trailer, but the one there makes YouTube look like 1080p by comparison.

Anyway, I'd already seen the trailer at the movies a month or two ago and it looks interesting. Hopefully the music doesn't leave my ears bleeding too badly, and the movie itself isn't ruined by a bunch of rappers turned "actors".

Just noticed this morning that the movie was written by James Ellroy [L.A. Confidential (novel)]and Kurt Wimmer [Equilibrium]. Kind of a bizarre combo right there, but there's no way I can pass up something by one of my favorite authors.

Tomatometer isn't looking too good so far, but from glancing over the reviews I'm thinking there's some retarded critics out there as usual... "too grim and cynical" -- ok, yea, that guy has never read or watched anything Ellroy has ever written I guess, because that's the entire point.

I'll be seeing this in theatres for Keanu (he's so bad, he's good) and Hugh Laurie.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that "The Game" isn't Triple H?

I agree... He does suck as an actor, but he picks roles he can play well. It's not like he's running around claiming he's the best actor ever. He just seems to go about his business and pick projects that suit him.

He has done some roles out of character and did quite a good job. Devils advocate was one of my favorite movies ever.

But yeah, the guy isnt all over the tv running his mouth and is just laid back. Plus he kinda went into hiding after his girlfriend and daughter died and that has a lot to do with it to most likely.

I was a bit disappointed. It was like watching a gangsta version of LA Confidential but the characters were less believable.

I watched this movie Friday night. If you enjoyed Training Day, then you will enjoy this movie.

Reeves and Whittaker have a really intense exchange at the end of the movie. Some things were unrealistic, from a police point-of-view, but 2 things were very accurate and realistic that I liked about the movie:

1. Violence is very random and never neat. I hate movies where the bullets are fired without consequence, and the 'bad guys' always get hit in the chest. Movies portray violence very neatly and succinctly, but here, people have entry wounds in the back of the neck, and the exit wound is through the cheekbone.

2. When an incident occurs, there are always three stories. What he said, what she said, and what actually happened. This entire movie is based off that premise. Forensics can only tell the story of a gunfight so far, and in the end, it's whoever is standing that gets to write up the paperwork.

I personally hated Training Day, but those two points were what I really liked about Street Kings too. I just wish they'd had a better--and less derivative of L.A. Confidential--plot to tie it all together.

I'm honestly curious what Ellroy's original draft for the movie was like, as I find it very hard to believe that a writer of his caliber made as many blunders as were in the final version.

If years of DVD 'Director's Cut' releases have told us anything, it's that the end product isn't necessarily what the director wanted to show you. Two movies that stand in my mind that illustrate that are Chronicles of Riddick and Daredevil. Both were merely decent in the theatres but I had to elevate them both to 'Pretty Damn Good' once I got a hold of the DC because both put back in elements that made the overall story make sense and flow better.

I imagine if a DC ever came out for this movie, some things would make a hell of a lot more sense.
