City of God

Brazil's entry for best foreign film, if you don't mind reading subtitles it is better than probably the last 50 American movies that I've seen.

Pretty much its about an ultra-cruddy slum in Brazil called by the misnomer City of God and chronicles the rise and fall of Lil Ze (called Lil Dice in the beggining of the movie) a ruthless drug lord. It also presents three decades of the slum and its cool to see the evolution or whatnot.

The film is masterfully shot and has some awe inspiring effects.

A definate must see if one doesn't mind large amounts of violence, cursing, and drug use.

Yeah, I remember watching this way back. Was really good IMO.

I never got around to it, but they made a tv spin off (of sorts) called City of Men. 4 seasons IIRC but I hear it's not as gritty as the movie was. I keep meaning to check it out.

Slight derail, but anyone else notice that Angelica (lead female role) was also the chick from I Am Legend? When I was seeing Legend in the theatres I kept racking my brain trying to figure out who it was.

Yeah, there's City of God (original) then there's City of Men (TV series) which 6 30 minute episodes about 2 13 year old boys. Then there's City of Men (Movie) which is about the same 2 boys but now at the age of 18.

I haven't gotten around to seeing the TV series, but both movies are great. City of Men is a good deal less dark, but if you enjoyed City of God, you're bound to like City of Men.

Anyone with Netflix can use the "watch now" feature or whatever to watch City of Men (TV series) online. I'll get around to doing that at some point -_-
