Pan's Labyrinth

I think there was a thread, but I can't find it for the life of me. The more I read about this movie, the better it looks. Here is a large and clear version of the teaser. Much better than the last one I've seen on the web.

There was a thread about this a while ago, I think the movie is several years old now, it's just taken forever to get a full US release I guess.

Hardly: it was in competition in the Cannes film festival in spring so it was not released at the time.

As in Peter Pan? That looks totally fucking awesome. Of course, I really dig Peter Pan movies for whatever reason, they're usually done pretty damn well.

Update: this film is coming out on December 29th, here is a full trailer.

http://trailers.picturehouse.com/pan...er_640x360.mov

It is rated R for graphic violence, so it's not your average fairy tale.

I watched it tonight and found it kinda bleh. I mean it's well produced, well acted, well directed, well written BUT somehow this finely crafted aircraft never left the ground for me. Maybe it will will fly for you?

That said the level of graphic violence is surprisingly high and not exactly where you would expect, special effects seem sometimes to be designed to evoque "old school" puppet effects and the sound designer likes shrieking sounds or hates the audience, one or the other.

Didn't fly for me either. The bottom line is that I wanted there to be even the slightest hint that she wasn't just imagining it all, and it's plainly obvious that she was. It's just a story about a kid who is in her own little world because reality sucks. She doesn't escape to the underworld to live happily ever after as a princess, she's just dead. End of story. I find myself comparing it to the other Labyrinth, and even more so to the vastly superior Mirrormask, and both of those movies worked much better because you were meant to believe it was all real. It's not that I need a happy ending, it's that Pan's Labyrinth just seems so pointless because of it. (end spoiler)

Thumbs up for the violence and special effects (though again I have to compare it not-so-favorably to Mirrormask--Del Toro certainly didn't have anyone like Dave McKean in charge of his art). Hopefully the R rating and subtitles will keep the kiddies away when I go see it in the theater next Friday.

Well... (spoiler) she does leave her room at some point without any realistic evidence as of how she could do it without magic(end of spoiler).

Thinking back about it, I think the main problem is that the fairytale simply is too generic and uninteresting. In fact it is worse than the fairytale that is told in the movie (about the rose on top of the mountain) and that is a problem.

(s)Yea, that's the one and only thing that hints of it maybe being real. She never used the chalk to travel from place to place before though, and if it really worked, I think she would not have just carelessly set it on the table for the Captain to find in case she needed it again to get out. I'm still convinced she's just plain dead.(/s)

And I agree about the rose story. I'm still trying to figure out if that was supposed to relate to the main story in some way, but I'm coming up empty.
