High Noon (spoilers included)

I saw this on that top 300 movies list and rented it off Netflix. It was black and white but there's still a lot of old black and white westerns that I like. Gary Cooper is the lead actor. I had seen Sopranos episodes where Tony referenced Gary Cooper as the archtypal quiet guy that doesn't say much but does what has to be done so I wanted to see it for myself.

I wasn't expecting much of a story or anything from the movie to really pull me into it so it was so old. I watched some other black and white war movie with Audie Murphy and it was just cheesy how happy go lucky it was. That wasn't to be the case with High Noon though.

Gary Cooper could have left town the whole movie and avoided conflict with Frank Miller and his 3 goons but he chose to stay even though he had to gun fight all 4 of them by himself. The townspeople wouldn't help at all even though they knew Frank Miller would destroy their town if he was allowed to take over again. It was stated several times in the movie that Gary had to fight Frank Miller and that's just how it was going to be. The buildup to that fight had me sitting there watching with this rage and a man has to do what a man has to do attitude right there with Gary. I could really identify with the emotion the character went through leading up to the fight and the necessity to fight even if the odds were so shitty against him.

I thought it was a pretty damn good movie considering its age.

I actually watched this movie in film class back in college 10 years ago. Its a very good film, with lots of symbolism. Gary Cooper wears a black hat which was very uncommon back then, as good guys generally wore white. The bad guy wore the white hat.

Agree, but this movie falls well outside the statute of limitations on spoilers.
