Why are people saying it makes no sense to make a donnie darko 2?? The first movie is about sending images of a rabbit back in time. I dont understand why they couldnt make a sequal off of that?? Fuck, just have Gary Jules sing another 80's song like Blue Monday and they will be set.

How about the school teacher who devoted his life to education and taught several generations of students so one could eventually become that engineer?

How about the guy who jumped through all the hoops to become a certified architect and built the schools that engineer was taught in.

How about the guy who harvested, processed and transported the resources to build that school?

How about the farmer who fed all those people?

What makes the only "worthy and contributing" members of society the ones who put bullets in people for a living? The private sector engineers, scientists and professionals don't need to serve as grunts EVER because their business as usually job skills give back more to the country than what some infantryman guarding a street corner will ever provide. It's an egregious disservice to the stability of the nation to deny the professional base of this country access to citizen rights if they are unwilling to potentially squander their lives and thus a valuable intellectual resources to the nation in some affair where a high school dropout would suffice and probably excel. What do you think Dougie Howser represented in Starship Troopers? Remember the test scores Rico received? You are "serving" and risk getting blown up on a daily basis, that doesn't make you a patriot. You could be serving your country much better if you had hit the books harder, it was your choice not to shape yourself into something more to offer than obedient flesh. The guys working back at home are the force multiplier that separates you from your cold war era weapon wielding, improvised explosive using, malnourished, intel-less adversaries.

Take away the "rest of us" and those who serve in a direct military sense amount to little more than a bunch of nobodies in tattered rags fighting with sticks for nothing.
To be fair, research and development of military products would probably fall under service in the world of Starship troopers.

Can someone explain to me why, in Starship Troopers (1), the bug planets weren't just nuked from the sky wholesale?

Believe it or not, that's answered in the film. Their first attempt at planetary bombardment was undermined by the sudden discovery that the bugs had surface to space weaponry which surprised the humans and cost them a large portion of their fleet.

The second set of fighting took place on a remote planet in the bug's sector and their intent was not to destroy the bugs, but to capture a "brain bug" to learn more about the species.

From what I understood, they hid underground and suffered only light casualties.

Plus, as noted above, they retaliated afterwards and raped the fleet who was just sitting around masturbating or something.

The first battle scene was them landing a massive force on the planet. They didnt bombard it at all. Or at least not with nuclear weapons. But their space fleet did get raped since they were unaware of bugs level of technology.

In the book the bugs are a sentient race with technology and other allies. And the starship troopers are all in ironman style suits!

Right, my point being, with that level of technology, you would think that many thousands of nuclear weapons -- presumably all of which would at least equal today's hydrogen bombs in megaton output -- could be launched against a planet, enough so that if nothing else a kind of grand nuclear winter could be brought about making the planet inhospitable to even bug life.

I think this is my least justifiable work procrastination session of the day.

The point is that they are fighting foes with starships and defenses on par or superior to their own. So you cant really just fly in and nuke them.
