Anime recommondations?

Im looking to watch some good anime. Ive always had respect for the genre, but haven't really watched much of it at all. Ive seen Akira, bits and pieces of Ghost in the Shell.

So can someone give me some solid titles that i should check out.

can't think of any "good some good" off the top of my head.

Do you want movies or series? What type of anime do you want? Comedy, Drama, Action? It's not a genre in itself, it's just animated

also check out the serious anime thread

since you posted this in the Movie House i suppose you want anime movies. Or also anime series?

well, for movies i suggest you Princess Mononoke. the very single best example of animation movie ever made. the story, characters and visuals are fantastic, even if its 10 years old

Ninja Scroll is another great movie, but graphically its a bit outdated

for movies I'll second Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll and Spirited Away, those 3 are really the cream of the crop to me. I thought I would hate Spirited Away and most other Mononoke movies since they're made for EVERYONE, but something about them makes me absolutely love them after a while.

Ninja Scroll is where I'd start. The english dub isn't bad, the action is top notch and I'd say its the most accessible anime out there for a male over the age of 16. It's what got me really interested in the genre.

Akira however, to me, is the best anime movie of all time. I've watched it probably close to 30 times. The music is so amazing that goes with it too. It's not for everyone though and it's a butchered version of the manga apparently (I only have the first four chapters, they're like $35 each).

The Rurouni Kenshin OVAS, while I'm not a fan of the show, are really well done and beautifully animated. Cowboy Bebop the movie you can also go in knowing nothing about the characters and enjoy the show. And I would recommend you watching the entire series of that because I think it's one of the most accessible animes out there, and the dub is good so it doesn't turn people off with having to read too.

Ghost in the Shell is pretty good, but it's never been one of my favorites. Part 2 came out not long ago, I own it and still haven't even watched it all the way through. It's beautiful to look at though, I'm a suck for high quality animation if you can't tell. For action there's also the two Vampire Hunter D movies too, not the greatest storytelling going on there but I enjoyed both of them. Jin-Roh, The Wolf Brigade is a good drama anime, and especially Grave of the Fireflies, probably the best drama anime out there.

Some other recent releases
Millenium Actress
Appleseed
Steamboy (good shit)

I really liked Nausaka: The Valley of the Wind almost as much Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle, with the nod going to Howl's Moving Castle I think.

I honestly didn't like the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. They are well animated I guess, but they just don't do it for me.

In terms of movies, though, the only other things I've liked are FFVII: Advent Children, which is exactly what you'd expect it to be, and Jin-Ro: The Wolf Brigade. That movie was really strange and difficult to follow at times (something lost in translation perhaps) but all in all it delivered on several levels.

If you are looking for shows as well the thread Ham linked and the TV forums are a better place to look.

Also, I've heard great things about Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika and I am looking forward to seeing them myself. (Same guy as Paranoia Agent and Millennium Actress I think?)

I second most of the movies listed above and definitely Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind as well.

Really, it's pretty hard to go wrong with any Miyazaki movies.

Hayao Miyazaki movies are pure gold. It is a tie for Naussica/Mononoke for my favorite, followed by Spirited Away. Akira/Ghost in the Shell/Grave of the Fireflies are also classics. I need to check out Ninja Scroll apparently...

Edit: OMFG where are my manners, one of my favorite Anime Movies of all time The Last Unicorn, movie is older than I am but still a classic, the original Transformers movie is really awesome too if you were at all a fan of the cartoons.

Maybe it's just me, but while Miyazaki's movies are amazingly done, I just don't have that much interest in rewatching them. Howl's Moving Castle is easily my favorite, but I have no interest in seeing it again. ^^;

If I had to pick three anime movies to be buried alive with...

Grave of the Fireflies - What got me into the genre, years ago. Heartwrenching and beautifully told. Makes me tear up every time.

Ninja Scroll - Just... watch it. It's graphically outdated, like fucker said, but it's a classic.

Rurouni Kenshin OVA (the first, not Seisou Hen) - The story is above average, and I found the series great until after the Kyoto Arc. The real star here is the music. Try "watching" this with your eyes closed like Wolf's Rain or Noir. =D

it's odd, you all seems to love Howl's moving castle while it bored me to no end. it was very senseless too even for a fairy tale story

maybe was the italian translation? /boggle

Ninja Scroll is a must have if you have any interest in Anime.

I haven't seen much Anime over all but if you want a sample check out the Animatrix... the used a few different studios and more or less gave them creative license to do what they wanted.

Howl's is alright, but yeah, it's a bit spotty Mr. fucker. I actually heard a lot got snipped in editing and they're releasing a high definition director's cut that makes it flow a lot better and has some parts making a bit more sense. Though I absolutely can't confirm that - was just told to me off hand by someone.

Metropolis and Spirited Away are the only two anime movies I've ever seen, and I liked them both.

I've disliked most anime series I've ever seen, it's just not my style. I did like The Record of the Lodoss War, Berserk, and Elfen Lied though. A lot.

Princess Mononoke is hands down Miyazaki's best in my book, Nausicaa being second.

If you want some interesting series to start in on, you could check out stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, or any of the Gainax series.

...actually belay that, I think FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion are the ones worth checking out. Gunbuster 2 you might find enjoyable.
