Actually, you're completely right. I forgot about Mel Gibson. I guess Catholicism really is evil.

Fanaticism should never be displayed in the public in regard to acting (while not fanaticism, Nicole Kidman wanting The Golden Compass to more kiddy) or just in general. :|

every actor with an extensive library has had his share of clunkers. I also find it funny that so many here point to Legend as a great Cruise movie.

He did everything in his power to keep that movie from getting released; he was embarrassed by that flick.
Remember when people actually bought Cd's? A little bit before then they also bought Tapes and records, and even more oddly they also bought soundtracks to movies.

Veiled sarcasm aside one thing I will always remember about going through peoples record collections in the late 80's was outside of the token Michael Jacksons thriller and a few other must have albums two soundtracks people always had were the Cocktail Soundtrack and the Top Gun Soundtrack.

EVERYBODY had the cocktail soundtrack. Every time I ever hear any song from that soundtrack I immediately think of that movie and I can't even remember what it was about, but whatever. Point is before Tom Cruise was even crazy and before he was even a huge star the guy was a license to print money. You made money off his movie and you made money off the soundtrack and you just made money hand over fist.

By the time the 90's hit his fame and power reached retarded levels.

I have had this discussion before about him in this very forum, love him or hate him the guy is our Generations Movie Star he epitomizes everything about that statement, and manages to do so while also bringing modern things to it like divorces and crazy fanatical behavior.

For all his crazy he has had a remarkable career and save a few roles has rarely gone far outside the box of playing his crazy self.

I don't really care what the guy does in his spare time, truth is you can bank on his movies, and while I don't love them all I can say that I haven't walked out of a TC movie disappointed and wanting my money back, sure some were forgettable to me when I was done, but at least I didn't feel like my time was wasted. There is a certain expectation that comes with having Tom Cruise in a movie and that expectation has never failed to be fulfilled in my mind.

I will say that his recent group of films have been largely forgettable. War of the Worlds espcailly and I wasn't terribly fond of MI3 either, and I would think his star is almost falling. Like I said above, I didn't feel like I was robbed but his movies are starting to lose the grandness that was a Tom Cruise movie in the 90's. Did enjoy his performance of Vincent in Collateral though, but I think that was because Foxx's character just played off him so well.

And you know, if nothing else the guy got nominated for an Oscar in the same movie he managed to utter the brilliant line : "Respect the cock" Thats got to be worth something.

It almost removes some levels of crazy.

I like Tom Cruise as a actor. I may even like him as a person. Its just that, everyone has a subject that they get batshit insane about. A ex-girlfriend, a dog, religion, science, the spinning teacup orbitting around the sun.

Some people just louder than others.

The key word is fanaticism. It doesn't matter what the subject is fanatics always make other people look really bad. I have no doubt in my mind some members of Co$ really wish Cruise would just shut the fuck up.

I am sure it is the same for Mel. They take their "faith" to a creepy level and end up doing more damage then good. That being said I do think Cruise has talent and his movie list is impressive. His behavior though has ruined it for me and I just can't watch one of his movies anymore without rolling my eyes.

I can still watch Gibson though. I just can't seem to fault Riggs!

I don't know how any of you people can say that War of the Worlds was anything but atrocious. It was of the most bland and unimaginative movies I've seen in a long time.

I'll admit, I hate the guy with a passion now due to his fanaticism, but I have liked a great many of his movies over the years. I never got into stuff like Eyes Wide Shut and Vanilla Sky (never even watched them, I knew I wouldn't be interested), and I didn't care for a bunch of stuff like Days of Thunder, etc. but in general I've liked many of his movies. I thought Minority Report was great, as was Last Samurai. War of the Worlds sucked balls, but he wasn't necessarily the only bad thing about that movie.

Unfortunately, his fanaticism has made me question seeing any movies he is in that I'm not just dying to see, like MI:3. I suppose if I *really* want to see the movie I'll still go see it even if he's in it, but if it is a borderline choice, his creepy factor is probably going to tip me in favor of passing on the movie.

That being said, I'm not going to stop watching his old movies either just because he's a freak now. If anything, I'll equate it to "back in the day" Metallica, and love how great they were before they turned to shit. Some of the old Tom Cruise stuff was fantastic, there's no denying it.

And since no one has mentioned it yet, anyone that was of an appropriate age when Risky Business came out can't help but have fond memories of that movie. I'm sure it sucks a bit now, but at the time you weren't cool if you hadn't seen it, and you certainly knew all the words to "Old Time Rock & Roll."

Vanilla Sky is a great movie. Seriously. If you've never seen it, give it a shot.

Yeah, I dunno why so many people slagged it. Vanilla Sky was fantastic from start to finish. The ending was perfect.

Fanaticism is self defeating. That's the lesson we should take from Mr. Cruise.

tom cruise is a great actor, but he is on a bit of a shit streak of late. and his scientology lunacy is getting way too much press. he needs a real publicist who will make him get his bizarre personal life in check.
