It has nothing to do with how hard each person works.

I mean fuck, I work at a business where all I do all day is sit on my ass doing shit on the computer, much of the time reading stuff like this. I don't work "hard" by any sense of the word. Yet right outside my office is a warehouse where people are welding, grinding metal, moving heavy shit, etc. and making far less than me. They are ALL working "harder" than me. But they can't do my job, because I grasp it better, am smarter, or whatever intangible you want to place on it. If my job paid me $10 million, I'd fucking take it just like the rest of you would, and I wouldn't think twice about those sorry saps in the warehouse making $10 an hour. I'm sure that I could claim my brain is working harder or something, but I'm just trying to justify my higher salary, when all it really is, is that I can get that much.

Athletes may "work" harder than doctors in a purely physical sense, or even other intangible ways, but level of "work" has never been a good indicator of wage. And just comparing those two in that manner just makes me want to ask what you're smoking.
I sit on my ass doing computer shit all day too. And before anyone gets the wrong idea, know that I hate sports. I cannot ever in my life recall watching a full televised sports game unless you count figure skating. Seeing a bunch of guys toss/kick around a ball is about as entertaining as watching someone play Tetris. That said, I think what they do is a lot harder than what doctors do. Why? Because fewer people can do it. It's simple really. And yeah, most of it is innate talent that they're born with, but so what? We judge people based upon their ability, innate or otherwise. Noone is impressed by the retard who spends 10 hours figuring out 3+3 even if it took them a lot of effort. That's not what I mean when I say "hard."

Hahaha. Instead of getting into the dodgy semantics of worth, and what bearing it has on salary(not much for the altruistic stuff), I'd just like to repeat another poster, there's no relation. If a person was rewarded according to their contribution to humanity, that fuckbag Kan, would have been dragged out into the street and shot full of holes by now. But no, instead he's still alive, unfortunately.

Actually, I can't say that. I haven't seen him in a while.

No. It's not that fewer people can do it.. it's that fewer people NEED to do it. There is only 9 positions to play in baseball, 11 positions on each side of the football. Teams are limited in the number of players they can sign to keep a fair and competitive balance. If more people were needed to play then more people would be playing. Doctors are not limited by such constraints.

I don't know how a thread about a black movie star evading taxes turned into a salary cap debate.

One reason the sentence was so harsh may be that Snipes sent a letter to the IRS telling them he was purposely evading taxes. He hooked up with a guy that supposedly found a 'loophole' in the tax code/Constitution allowing him to not pay taxes.

I can't believe I just read a thread where a few fucking retards just had the audacity to compare athletes to doctors.

There's NO fucking comparison. Doctors work MUCH harder and SHOULD be paid more.

Wait what?

Athletes train, run, jump.. play 4+ hour games, smashing into each other or running up and down a court or field...

Doctors just stand there and cut shit and write on paper with poor handwriting.

Seriously tho, I know what you mean

If millions of people would pay money to sit down and watch a doctor preform surgery I'm sure they'd get paid more too.

It's not like you have to compete in surgery with 10 other doctors just as good as you in front of a large audience to determine who is the best doctor, and the 9 doctors that lose become door-to-door salesmen. That would be akin to the pressure of being a professional athlete.
Holy shit. Just when I think I've read the stupidest thing the internet can produce, another retard goes and ups the ante.

This is a matter of opinion, but I would argue that holding someone's life in your hands is far more intense than any sport could ever be.

Isn't this true for any job? All you have to do as an athlete is not mess up?

That's exactly what it's like. Starting with the MCAT and your undergrad GPA, medicine is one big competition from start to finish. People devote at least 4 years (often more) of their lives in class 8-5 and studying every night and every weekend because there is no tolerance for "almost" with peoples' lives.

No, not messing up doesn't get you anywhere except maybe in the world of gymnastics. In a competition you have to better than everyone else.

This is what happens when people watch Gray's Anatomy all day. They get a romanticized view of the life of a doctor. Doctors don't have to work as hard as you think. People can fuck through their classes and exams and still become doctors, because it's not really that hard. They're not competing against each other like athletes do where there can only be a few. They just have to meet a certain bar, which is pretty low in the scheme of things. You could make the requirements to be a WoW raider to be an epic with all the hyperbole on this thread, like doctors are monks that have to train for 25 years to do something. It's not that hard, you show up and study every day for a long time and you're a doctor if you're reasonably intelligent. You can play 16 hours a day every day on the tennis courts and 99.7% of you could not become pro tennis players.

The ante must be pretty high since it goes up every time you read one of your own posts.

this, as i mentioned earlier if you are only helping one person at a time you will never make 30 million a year no matter how great you are. if a-rod only played ball with one fan watching he wouldnt get shit either. its when you have 58,000 screaming yankee fans who all paid 50 bucks a piece to get in and 35 bucks for parking who want to see a-rod, then you have the millions watching the game at home or listening in their car who also fork over big money on the sponsors.

thats when you can garner the big bucks. i am not saying a-rod should get paid that much for playing ball but if i were him and i knew how much money i was generating for the yankee corporation and MLB then i would want a big hunk of the pie as well. same goes for big budget actors. if i just starred in a movie that grossed 800 million dollars and i only got paid a couple million for it i would be having my agent on the phone trying to get me a lot more.
