Dragon Ball was pretty good because it was mostly wacky comedy, sadly the comedy almost completely went away with Dragon Ball Z. That's probably a side effect of japanese publishing system: the Dragon Ball saga lasted so long on weekly pre-publication magazines that the target audience had to move up from children to teenagers, changing the focus from comedy to dick waving, much to the author's dismay (at least that's how I read a final were comedy comes back with over the top absurdities).

I don't know about you, but whatever your age is, comedy remains comedy and does not age, on the other hand "I am the strongest!" "No! me!" "No! I am the stongerestisim!" grew old very very fast.

That's especially the case for something like Dragon Ball Z that is extremely shallow and without redeeming features, as opposed to other dick waving shows for teenagers such as Saint Saya where the dark tone and the super emphatic music makes the dick waving almost poetic.

Oh in the cut, move and edit feasts that are my posts, I somehow forgot one of the things I wanted to say: Dragon Ball (with or without Z) is undoubtedly extremely popular across the world and iconic in both its drawn and animated form. But being good and being popular amongst teenagers are two different things entirely (but not necessarily antinomic!).

let me clear one thing. i have all DB manga about 2m from where i am right now. i loved DB when i came out, and i love it even now

that said, i consider DBZ one of the worst piece of anime trash ever done

as someone said, it's fucking ENDLESS with dozens upon dozens of episodes where it happend absolutely NOTHING.

the usual 30 mins DBZ episode was divided this way:

10 mins showing what happened in the previous episode

then we have 10 mins of narrative voice talking about how the sun was shining in the sky while the characters just stand there staring at each other.

The last 10 mins (that finally show something going on) usually comprehend 5 mins of shoutings while powering up and proclaming how badass they are, 3 mins of action (done in the worst possible way. Where the manga showed an actual fight with single, powerfull punchs, the anime's fights were nothing more than a bunch of kinetic lines or pretty lights but nothing actually was going on the screen) ending the episode with the narrative voice asking "what will our hero do? wait next week asshole"

DB manga was great. the anime instead was stupid commercial serie, streched in every possible way, adding senseless episodes just to make it last as much as possible to keep milking the cashcow

I watched it on French TV in the late '80s / early '90s, so I can't help you

I'll be damned to say if I didn't love the shit out of it when I used to watch it though. My favorite characters in anime are in DB and DBZ and I don't think that will ever change with time. The wacky, over-exaggerated, pointless never ending everything honestly made the show what it was and still is for some, a great way to spend 30 min of an afternoon after school( or whenever the hell it airs nowadays), two or three times a week.

Welcome to the world of Anime they either stretch out an episode to not get ahead of the manga or make filler episodes like Goku gets a drivers license. Either way sandy vaginas will cry.
