| As much as I wanted to I just did not enjoy The Fountain. Seemed way too pretentious. I thought the same of Magnolia. I found it kind of weird, because I freaking loved Crash. That's a movie I'm surprised nobody has listed yet. Well, maybe not. It got tons of flack for winning the Oscar and it has that whole "will it hold up against the test of time" bullshit, but damn, I'd never cried during a movie as hard as I did when that little girl ended up not getting shot. |

+8 Internets | I only listened to Blumpster! And if it wasn't so early when I first posted, you can be sure American Psycho would have been on my list. I'm sure I'll have a secondary list by tomorrow. |

+5 Internets | This list took a while to make and I am sure there are things I forget. Knowbody Knows - very powerfull children related japanese drama. The Forest of Mogari - very powerfull grief related japanese drama. Silent Light - Hyper solemn and magnificent adultery related drama. Yi Yi: A One And A Two - Choral movie about how to live. Best film ever? The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - bitter sweet comedy that breaks all the rules. Kung-Fu Hustle - kung-fu comedy that follows all the rules masterfully. Rois et Reine - Half drama, half comedy, 100% French masterpiece. The New World - Boy meets girl at the ultimate legendary level. Children of Men - What you see is what you get and you see everything. Offside - or Crimson Gold by the same Iranian director. Life is tough but so is our will to live. PotC: Dead Man's Chest - What is it you say? Family action-comedy actualy entertaining and by a director with a pulse? The Prestige - It has David Bowie in it. Pride & Prejudice - surprizingly masterful. Fast Food Nation - very important and ambitious movie in a very humble form. Yet, very very well crafted. Summer Palace - can't be together, can't be apart, for 20 years in China. Breathtaking. In The Mood For Love - The ultimate Boy meets Girl movie, the China version. Time And Tide - HK action at its recent best? To The Left of The Father - Visual hyper-lyricism and non stop flow of poetic and litterary language. A UFO. The Son - You killed my son but I will make a man out of you. A raw and powerful movie of filiation. Not to be confused with The Child from the same belgian authors and which is crap. Werckmeister Harmonies - A reflection on totalitarism by the craziest hungarian alive: Bela Tar. The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford - Because beheading snakes is awsome. West of the Tracks - 10h long documentary on the agony of an chinese industrial city. A haunting experience (even watching it, like I did, on DVD in 4 or 5 sessions works). Birth - I think the end is not as satisfying as the rest, but I forgot it so who cares? Unbreakable - one super-hero movie to bury them all. The Matrix Reloaded - Most sensible people know Aliens is the best one. PS: I would like to add that some brilliant directors are not in this list, because their best movies - that I saw - were before 2000 (Tsai Ming Liang, Nobuhiro Suwa, Takeshi Kitano, David Lynch, David Cronnenberg, etc...) or because their body of work makes them important yet none of their movies stands out enough to make this list (Hang Sangsoo, Jia Zhang Ke, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Apichatpong Weerasetakul, etc...).

| Yea, Unbreakable is good. Sixth Sense is decent, don't hate it but it's nowhere close to being on the list. Everything else he's done blows horribly. So far most of you have posted movies I was thinking about putting up too...except for Szlia. That's a lot of weird Asian stuff and I do not typically like films from other cultures. All though I was very tempted to add Downfall, "Der Untergang", because I absolutely love it. Last edited by Blumpster : 02-06-2008 at 01:24 PM. |
