It's the methods involved. If they were just protesting and disseminating information, I doubt they'd get much if any bad press. Once you start intentionally harassing people, conspiring to vandalize their houses of worship, try to intimidate them and interfere with their religious practices, etc., you cross an important line. Americans are big fans of freedom of religion, even where that religion seems kooky and even potentially dangerous to a lot of people.

On top of that, I think a lot of people are freaked out by the potential of motivated angry hackers, and this story plays on those fears.

When "religious practices" include fair game and "worship" includes brainwashing, I'd say "any means necessary" is applicable to disrupting any and all activities that this cult would undertake. What would you advocate in fighting terrorists abroad? Because most people would say violent force is perfectly reasonable in battling their influence and activities. Why should harassment and hacking not apply to a cult that employs violence and intimidation to silence detractors? As we've seen, disseminating and mere protests have done nothing to inflict any substantial damage to the Co$. They are a bane upon the world and are not valid in any religious or spiritual sense, thus they should be eradicated through any means necessary. If our government can't or won't take steps necessary to eliminate a dangerous cult, then I'd say it's up to the people to deal with them. Sounds reasonable to me. I just don't see why the scientologists should be allowed to continue their atrocities unabated, and if it takes extreme measures, then so be it.
