my only complaints were i thought cobra commander was dr. mindbender through half the damn movie until the big reveal. Im not entirely sure i like his mask. Also barones turning out to be a good guy really bugged me unless that was in a comic, i thought she always stayed pretty loyal to destro.

really? Haven't seen it yet, but yes. The Baroness and Destro get married. They are loyal to each other and no one else, they both go against Cobra at one point even. There is some mind control issues at a point... Baroness double-crossing Destro would be really out of character.

heavy spoilers

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
basically they played it where baroness is being mind controlled through the entire movie and her and Duke had a past relationship (cobra commander is also shown as her brother) and she turns at the last second to "save" Duke from being mind controlled like her, at the end they are on the flag and she is being rehabilitated.

Here is a really good article on this^ and on the overall current state of movies, like why more people have seen Transformers and JI Joe than The Hurt Locker. Really good read imo.
Roger Ebert's Journal: Archives

Also: His points about talk shows are spot on.

From the link above:

Quote:
The movies themselves aren't left on their own, either. Paramount's decision to refuse advance critics' screenings of "G. I. Joe" was explained with refreshing honesty by Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures, to Christy Lemire of the Associated Press: "After the chasm we experienced with 'Transformers 2' between the response of audiences and critics, we chose to forgo opening-day print and broadcast reviews as a strategy to promote 'G.I. Joe.' We want audiences to define this film."

That hasn't meant no advance screenings. Indeed, the movie was recently scoring 85% on the Tomatometer, although today (August 6) it is down to 65% and dropping. Why so strong at the beginning? The studio screened it (in the words of the invaluable Goldstein, for "certified fan-boy zealots"). While some of them do articulate their reasons (I'm convinced Harry Knowles, bless his heart, really believes what he says), many are simply delighted to deliver an "exclusive early look" to their websites, making good on their half of an implied deal.

Wasn't the Hurt Locker rated R? Seems like sort of a silly comparison.

Yes, it was.

Second best movie of the summer behind Up in my opinion, though.

What usually happens in the 24 hours before a North American opening day is that the Tomatometer reading starts to drop as the International Date Line creeps inexorably toward Newfoundland, and MSM critics from Australia and the UK begin to check in. Another corrective is that the score on Metacritic.com often skews lower than the Meter because it monitors (dare I say) reputable critics and not fanboy zealots.
similar to what i read the other day. a lot of critics dont like being pushed away from doing their jobs. if this trend continues then there will be less of a need for them and then they get axed. critics like roger ebert never like fun movies, i mean when the guy directed a movie on his own it was a trainwreck, Gene Siskel was the "everyman". if he liked a film it usually meant it was pretty good.

Is there enough rad ninja action to go see this? I am sorta on the fence - I could go at the 1:30 matinee and just kill my lunch break, but that's what I thought with Terminator Salvation, and wished I had walked out.

But man, I do want to see some Ninjas fucking shit up.

I thought it was good. Not great, but good. Worth seeing, especially in a theater, digital if you can help it. They keep the action going almost non-stop and the majority of the character moments are brief. Even the flashbacks fit well in the scheme of things, and watching Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes beat the shit out of each other as kids was pretty awesome.

And I will say this: Kids, especially boys, in the range of 8-12 are going to go batshit insane over this movie.

Just got back from it, and OMG did I ever have a blast. I swear this movie had some of the silliest, most ridiculous action scenes I've ever seen, but in a good way! As was said previously in this thread, make sure to toggle your brain to "DUMB FUN" before watching this or you'll probably have a seizure. One of the most fun summer movies in a while, and brings back a refreshing "Good Guys VS Bad Guys in Silly Bases" scenario.

As was said before also, the battle-suits are only in one (a good one too!) action scene. Oh and Snake Eyes owns your face.

¨
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Did anyone else have a blast watching the duel between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow? I mean.. here is the way I see it :

- Ray Park (Snake Eyes) - CHECK
- Fight in a reactor core room with lasers - CHECK
- Dual blades that merge into one single long blade - CHECK
- Epic music - CHECK

Duel of the Fates from Episode I all over again! That was too funny.

Also gotta love how since this movie was directed by the director of The Mummy, he also decided to give parts to his buddies! Hello Brendan Fraser for a whole 5 seconds on screen and Arnold Vosloo as the President doppleganger!

So for those who have seen it, is this better than Transformers, or better than Terminator? (I personally liked Terminator better, I don't plan to watch Transformers 2 again if I can avoid it)

I liked both Transformers 2 (Slow-Mo Soldiers + Robots + Tits) and Terminator 4 (C'mon, it's the director of fucking Charlie's Angels, for fuck's sake) for what they were and what I expected them to be (IE : silly blockbusters with butchered story, dumb fun and explosions). G.I. Joe was a LOT more fun than either though. A detail of importance though, G.I. Joe was never that big over here in Europe, so it doesn't have the huge fanbase and the nerdraging fans that you have in America, so maybe some people here will be pissed by changes in the story or some characters. However, from what I know of the franchise, they did pay quite a tribute to the fans for some things and there are famous quotes and references.

I had a thought during the movie though (yes I know it was risky to think during it but danger is my middle name).. What the hell kind of budget did they have for this movie? I mean, there was barely a scene in the movie that didn't involve crazy pyrotechnics, crazy CGI or a combination of both. I never expected someone would push that big of an enveloppe for a movie based on G.I. Joe, but looks like the money was well spent at least. Then again, getting mostly cheap actors was probably a good move to save the money for the 'splozions!
