The Ninth Gate (Old Johnny Depp Movie) (spoilers included)

I've seen this movie 3 or 4 times now and the more I watch it the more I like it. I think I like it in a similar way that I like Mr. Brooks. Spoilers included after this:

Ninth Gate wasn't real big with special effects, matter of fact they're kinda cheesy and in some ways the movie looks almost like a B movie. I can't say I have any infatuation with the devil as is a major underlying theme within the movie but the devil as a female is intriguing.

Throughout the movie it was like the devil was selecting a mate that had been planned for hundreds of years until the right man was alive.

Any other opinions?

I saw this when it was released ,and really dug it. Johnny Depp carries the film tho.

If you like that movie you should try Angel Heart which is similar,but IMHO much better.

Angel Heart bored the fuck out of me, but I was 12 years old or so when I tried to watch it. 9th Gate was good shit, but yeah Depp made the movie. Without him it would have been mediocre at best. The story is ok but kind of spells out a little too much imo.

Yeah that movie would be a tad rough for a 12 year old. They just remastered it,and it still a very good flick if you like that lovecraftian crime noir.

As much as I loved The Ninth Gate, Robert De Niro was fucking bad-ass in Angel Heart.

It's based a book by the same name, written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte (has written a few other good books as well, personal favourite being The Fencing Master). If you liked the movie, I recommend searching for the book, at least the translation I read contained the "original" woodcuts, which brings a whole new level to the reading when you can try and break the code yourself while you read.

I barely remember this movie, but I do remember that I saw it with about 5 or 6 friends, and we thought it was amongst the worst we've ever seen. It was fucking atrocious, I thought. But I really couldn't tell you why at this point.

lol yes, in the most overwrought cheesy way imaginable. Maybe it was just because we weren't in to the movie, but ending was unintentionally hilarious.

Great movie. The last scene of the movie was 100% terrible. The ending needs more work.

Also just to clarify, the girl in the movie isn't the Devil, she is alluded to be the Whore of Babylon.

I've seen this about a dozen times, and I like it a bunch. I'm a sucker for satan/theological flicks though, so I'm an easy sell.

Whore-chick should have been hotter though.
