Dragonball Z Movie in the works

All I can say is LoLz

STEPHEN CHOW RUNS A MANGA HUSTLE

http://chud.com/nextraimages/dragonballnonsense.jpgIf I ever watched an episode of Dragonball Z, it certainly wasn't on purpose. And if I ever did this detestable thing, I definitely didn't enjoy it. And I know this to be the Non's honest truth because, last I checked, Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Oshii and Katsuhiro Otomo never put their name to a Dragonball feature.

It's not that I hate manga and anime; it's just that I hate bad manga and anime, and there happens to be a surplus of it (which is why I limit my viewing to the work of the four old men above). Dragonball has come to epitomize everything I loathe about the hyperactive and hyper-incoherent worst impulses of the genres (at least from what I've gleaned in passing); it's all about sensory overload. Even thinking about it wears me out.

Given the Dragonball brand's worldwide popularity, I'm not surprised that a major Hollywood studio has decided to give it a live-action go. And I'm particularly unsurprised to learn that this cynical exercise in pointlessness will be bankrolled by Fox. What troubles me, however, is that the great Stephen Chow will produce the film. Obviously, it was only a matter of time before Chow cashed in stateside, but... Dragonball?

Worse, Fox is rushing the film into production to make an August 15, 2008 release date, so you just know this is going to be something special. Factor in the leading pretty-boy duo of Justin Chatwin and James Marsters, and that should tell you how very much Fox cares about this movie. James Wong, who's a pretty deft hand with trash, is signed to direct. I've actually enjoyed everything Wong's directed (Final Destination 1 & 3, The One) on one dubious level or another; if he he were the sole draw, I might pencil this in as a promising piece of garbage for '08.

But I expect more from Stephen Chow. Though he's made some crappy movies in his day, he's never trawled the artistic depths where Dragonball resides.

I'm not worried about the release date, because if they *really* want to capture the essence of the show, its going to be 3 hours of yelling and powering up, then a 10 minute flying fight that destroys an empty island and roll credits, which i'm sure can be done in a day or two.

What fucking character could James Marsters possibly portray in the DB universe? He's 45 now and he still looks British no matter how much hair gel he uses.

Spike from Buffy is playing Piccalo. No, I'm not making this up.

To defend this project it should be said that Dragon Ball (without Z) was packed with pretty funny comedy and that the only good Dragon Ball Z episodes are the ones going back to the comedy roots of the serie (and of the author). So, since Stephen Chow is around and is the master of comedy we know... maybe... it will lean toward the comedy side and be funny.

Sadly the average Dragon Ball Z fan probably does not care much about comedy, and having a Hong Kong producer at the wheel for the american adaptation of a japanese anime sounds like a good mix to disappoint just about everyone.

And, should we expect anything less from someone who got their sn from one of the Dragonball characters?

The creepy thing is I like the two actors involved. The Invisible was a good movie, and Spike from Buffy/Angel.

Scary.

If you took Dragonball Z (~150 hours of material) and squished it down to 2 hours and told Chow to direct it, it would be pure gold.

DBZ has always been my guilty pleasure. What really weighs it down in my mind is the endless filler. There are so much episodes crammed full with stuff that I just don't give a shit about. Think about it: Saiyans, Frieza, Cell, Buu. Each get like 30 minutes. I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

Now make it live action. It sucks again.

You know, people doubted that the magic of Street Fighter could be captured on the big screen. I think Van Damme proved all those naysayers wrong! Don't be so quick to dismiss what is bound to be an amazing film.

THe show was mostly good as far as i was concerned, the primary problem was the fact that instead of having filler eps they had 10 minutes of staring/charging. But humor was the primary reason i kept on watching it with action being second.

Last i checked the movie wasn't in production, it really is this time then or?

The author of that article is a pretty annoying elitist, way to miss out on great anime by being limited to four directors. I think i'll limit my movie viewing to four american directors, spielberg, cameron, lee, and uh that one guy.

Okay, this is real: IGN: DBZ's Goku, Piccolo Picked

This movie better be mostly comedy or it's going to fucking suck. Whoever did the DBZ Neo vs. Smith fight needs to do that in this movie to or it's going to fail like those retarded chinese movies.
