Ninja Scroll is highly overrated. If I were to name off an old-time cult classic I'd say Vampire Hunter D over Ninja Scroll.

Steamboy, Paprika, Appleseed, to some extent, Ghost in the Shell movies (though you might want to see some of the OAV's beforehand).

Thanks for the all feedback. I rented Princess Mononoke and I am tracking down Ninja Scrolls. I will tell you what I think.

Whatever it is, just watch it subtitled. Don't ever bother with dubbed anime (except with Giant Robo, which was superior dubbed).

I personally don't think the Ghost in the Shell movies are worth much of a damn.

The "Stand Alone Complex" full series of Ghost in the Shell is superior to them in an immense way.

Appleseed is pure fucking trash. How the fuck can you recommend that and shit on Ninja Scroll?

The Miyazaki movies are hit and miss, some of them just flat out suck (spirited away/howl's castle come to mind) and you can't relate to them unless you have appreciation for Jap culture to begin with. The better ones have iffy qualities (Mononke comes to mind, hatred is owning my hand lol)

Anime is just a style, there's huge fucking diversity in collections and movies, you need to be more specific in what you like about Anime to get better recommendations. A Miyazaki movie like GotF is completely different than Full Metal Panic!, though they are both anime.

If you want a Pupu platter:

- Cowboy Bebop
- Full Metal Panic!
- Haibane Renmei
- Last Exhile
- Azumanga Daioh!

5 A+ diverse anime collections you can chew on.

While those are some good recommendations...

Azumanga Daioh! is the same fucking 5 episodes over and over and over again.

Hm...while I'm thinking of oldies, trying to find Now and Then, Here and There would be a good challenge. Thirteen episodes of pure gold.

It's basically Seinfeld in anime form. There is no real plot!

... That being said, I watched the whole series

I loved Azumanga but I wouldn't recommend it to someone brand new to anime. But hey, once you've seen it you'd finally understand all those 4chan gifs.

I watched the entire thing too. But man, you have to really like that shit and even then it gets very tiring. It's not something I'd recommend to your average anime fan and definitely not someone trying to get into anime.

Well, I tried to put a comedy series in there. The other choices could be Cromartie High School, or Excel Saga (which I own, but haven't seen, so I couldn't recommend.)

I'll just go ahead and recommend it then.

Actually, we should just link the anime thread in the TV forum. Sheesh.

The best comedy I've ever seen would be this year's Seto no Hanayome - definitely worth the download and something that I'd start people on. I don't say that lightly either.
