Haha, my first exposure to X was the movie, so when the TV series finally came out, I was pretty satisfied with it. The mini character guide I linked helps a little bit with the backstory. In the movie, Subaru and Seishirou have like 2 lines each and 2min of screen time I don't remember much of the supressed humor, gotta go watch the series again.

Another good character driven show is Haibane Renmei, great music too. This one has no action at all and the first 3-4 eps are dull, but if you stick it out till ep 6, things get really good and the payoff is well worth it. Try to avoid spoilers and go into the show blank.

I see someone else recommended Place Promised in Our Early Day (Beyond the Clouds). I'll agree and add Voices of a Distant Star. Good stories and Voices was written and animated by one person, just added VAs and music. Same guy did Beyond the Clouds, but I think he got another animator to do the characters.

I may have forgot to list "Now and then, Here and there" in my last listing. It's a bit on the series side and is a OVA serious so it has high quality animation.

The story however is what made it great.

A good review of it:

Now and Then, Here and There

also i'm pretty much gonna list anime academy's highest rated anime page since i've seen most of these (at least the ones that aren't movies--i'm not the biggest fan of a lot of anime movie houses).

Library

In fact you might as well watch everything on that list in order (skip the really old stuff i guess).
