Everquest finally coming to a theater near you?

Sony & Arad Team on EverQuest - ComingSoon.net

Sony Pictures is teaming with producer Avi Arad on a big screen adaptation of Sony Online Entertainment's 3-D massive multiplayer online fantasy role-playing game EverQuest, reports IGN.

According to the site, the studio is eyeing a 2009 or 2010 release for the film. Michael Gordon (300) will write the screenplay.

Plot details for the feature are unknown, but the fantasy epic will be based on an original pitch by Gordon and will feature some seminal characters from the game.

Arad has been a producer of all of Sony's "Spider-Man" movies so far, and has produced numerous superhero movies, such as the "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" films, and many more.

Visit the game's official website for more information.
I heard about an EQ movie years ago and then again last year(which I think was this current project). Here is to hoping it finally makes it out the door, even if it is a laughable movie it will be worth a ticket price for sure. Oh, I also hope they do EQ1 and dont base this movie on EQ2. What a disappointment that would be.

Imagine if they base the movie on the scene on the first Everquest box.

I'm hoping (which I doubt they'll do) they do a trilogy like LOTR. They start in original EQ and go through Kunark and Velious. Though I guess the first movie would have to be a big success for something like that and I just dont see that happening.

Getting the 300 script writer isn't saying much since he already had a graphic novel to follow and the added stuff wasn't anywhere near the writing level that the main story existed at. At least until that final scene in the council.

Get a competant director like Matthew Vaughn, who directed the excellent fantasy "Stardust" and that'll be a step in the right direction. If they treat it like a money grab (lol, EQ stopped being that a while ago), then it'll exist at the D&D movie level...

Yeah not like 300 was amazing storytelling or something anyway. I can't imagine this being a good thing really. There's just so much there to work with, I figure it'll just be some stereotypical fantasy shit. Would love for a story dealing with the gods or maybe even Lord Nagafen / Lady Vox, but they need to be very careful adding dragons. They look cheesy as shit 99% of the time in shit

Such thoughts are the reason every fan is disappointed by any movie adaption of source material.

The plot won't have fucking anything to do with anything that ever happened in the games. It'll just be some generic save the world from an evil wizard dude, probably MAYONG played by Jeremy Irons. Insert random teen hero to represent us as the "player", whose love interest will be Firiona Vie played by some ditzy blonde.

I also expect to see a gnome or dwarf used poorly for comic relief.

That's about it.

Anyone ever read the EverQuest comic they made years ago?

I remember cracking up at the halfling rogue, because in one frame he's like stabbing and it has him yelling "BACKSTAB!!" in huge letters.

They could make a generic movie doing that, but what if they played off of the players' memories, and was written from the get-go for that? Unlikely, but imagine if they did things in the movie that made the viewers think, "Oh no, a train!" and they smile remembering their own experiences like that. I think it would be funny/fun and could go for a different approach if they stay away from the generic-epic-storyline.

the audience they would be catering to would be way too minor... and critics would rip it to shreds

Fuck critics; movie reviews have never changed the outcome of me going to a movie or not. It's usually determined the minute I hear about a movie whether I'm seeing it or not.

Although going for a 'nostalgic' approach to it would result in it being watered down for it to sell, effectively destroying the nostalgic approach it was initially going for.

Hey, it'll be like Vanguard!

I'm imagining a horrible script that represents nothing from the game. There will be some famous character names sprinkled in the background but it's probably going to be generic fantasy world/shit plot movie. Like what Square did with their Final Fantasy movie...

I owned one issue... I remember that. The best though was the fucking ranger. "My tracking sense is picking up something nearby!"

...What the fuck? I'm convinced the writers had absolutely no idea what the term even means.

Pretty much what I'm expecting. It'll be like how EQ2 was in relation to the original game: no places look the same, completely different characters, not even the same spells, but EverQuest terminology sprinkled throughout. Realistically, they'd be hoping to appeal to an audience much broader than just those of us who played the game, so they won't care if they piss us off. They'll just do a LotR knock-off with EQ names and places and hope to rake in the big bucks.

they cant sell it to just people who played EQ. at most 2 million people will get the references, and that's only 20mill in ticket sales.
