Superman: Doomsday

I searched and couldn't find a post about this. If there's not one already, I'm very surprised. Figured comic fanbois would have been all over this one. The death of Superman! It's got 3 stars on Amazon.com, but I normally don't give a shit about reviews there. I've got it ordered already, playing the waiting game now. Anyone got ahold of a copy yet and can give me a heads up of what to expect? Thoughts, opinions on this one? Someone's got to have heard about this, it's been advertised on adult swim for a week or two now.

I know I can watch it ON Demand but haven't done so yet. I'll probably check it out tonight.

Voices are strange at first. They also added some ugly ass cheekbones on Clark/Supes for some reason. At first the crazy cheekbones and voices bugged me but by half way through I barely noticed it anymore. Guess I was just too used to the JLU voices and Superman design.

As for the movie, I liked it, pretty good fight scenes. Not as good as some of the Batman animated movies but better than the last Supes animated movie (Brainiac Attacks).

Lex is totally fucking gay for Superman

agreed with huh on all accounts. It was alright, but I enjoyed the JLA and Batman stuff a lot more. The Kevin Smith cameo was funny though.

agreed, after the superman animated series/jla designs and voices, the ones they used for this movie were just kind of weird to see, not exactly in a bad way cause lois was drawn just fine. lex luthor looks bloody weird however, as someone once said about lindsay lohan "Get that bitch a sammich!".

I dont quite understand the storyline in comparison to how the JLA series had doomsday depicted. In that story arc, the government took a piece of supermans DNA and bred a stronger fighter in order to kill him, 'just in case' he ever went haywire again, but in this movie some universe more advanced locked him away in a ship and fired him 2 miles deep into earths crust hoping he wouldn't be unleashed ever again. is their a difference in the comic book versions of doomsday as to what actually happened?

Agree here. As for the movie, I thought it was pretty poor overall. It had it's shining moments, mostly fight scenes, and the presentation of a solid what if? scenario, but overall some things felt so underdeveloped.

In the comics doomsday was pretty much the same as in the film, industructable being from another planet. Superman was out of commision for a bit longer and in the meantime there was a whole slew of would-be supes vying to take his place. Superman regaining his title and sorting out the large mess cause by at least one of the would-bes was a pretty significant storyline.

In the comics, Doomsday was made on another planet by scientists (I don't remember if the scientists were human or not). The planet was basically uninhabitable with a nasty toxic atmosphere, extreme temps, etc. They created this baby monster thing and shot him out onto the planet unprotected. After he died, they scooped his body up and cloned another one, rinse repeat. After a bunch of times doing it, he started to live longer on the planet before he died.
Then, he finally didn't die and knocked down the door and killed all the scientists.
His body basically adapted to various situations after that, making him nigh indestructable.

I hope that was clear (enough).

Glad that this has come out. I actually won a Plat. version of the comic back in college and hopefully this might boost the price...lol.

Well, I haven't seen the "movie" so I can't really comment on differences, but that's what happened in the comic.

The Doomsday in Superman Doomsday is not the same Doomsday in JLU. They are separate universes if you will.

I kind of thought this movie sucked. The different voices made it painful and I thought Doomsday was a ploy for sales, given what happens in the latter half of the movie.

I thought it was pretty good. I don't catch many of these animated American comic movies so I had no expectations. The fairly harsh language, more 'adult' situations, blood and death was a surprise. Lois was smoking hot too (for a cartoon!).

Was entertaining and worth watching.

I am a huge fan of the animated JLA and JLU series and thought this movie was pretty good. I already knew that the movie had different animators, voice actors, and different "history" than the television shows, so that was no surprise. I was completely entertained for the length of the movie and it had some really funny parts too...

...favorite being when Lex was trying to goad clone-Superman into the "red sun" room. Clone-Supes just shut the door on Lex and tossed the entire chamber through the building.

I guess it was okay for an American cartoon...felt like tv quality and nowhere near major production quality (animation). The acting was quite poor imo, while they had adult themes it was really shallow. What these cartoons really lack is emotional depth and people that actually seem like people. I think even the comics projected more human emotions/depth/etc. and the characters didn't seem like cardboard cut-outs. The better anime's out there are leagues ahead of this crapshoot.

The doomsday and super man returns series of comics was one of the few I actually read. I'm saddened at how much was removed and shortened for the movies. The way he gets his powers back is also very different if I remember correctly (pretty sure someone had to die or something!), not to this lacking all those superman wannabe's.

Good thing I never got into JLU (I pretty much stopped watching all American cartoons that wasn't in the adult comedy category like ten years ago though so that makes sense!), that version sounds pretty horribly different from the comics.

God damn, this makes even medium quality Anime look godly.
