| Robotech From Yahoo TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech." ADVERTISEMENT After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up feature rights to "Robotech," a 1980s Japanese cartoon series with giant robots known as mechas. Maguire is eyeing the lead role, and will serve as a producer. "We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film." A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots. The $686 million worldwide box office success of "Transformers" has inspired other studios to assemble giant robot movies. Last month, Fox-based Regency picked up 1980s Japanese anime series "Voltron." Reuters/Hollywood Reporter |

| Lol, we all know that the movie is going to deal with a kid coming across and alien mecha and using it to fight against the intruding aliens. There will only be reference to the SDF-1, no Roy Fokker, no Glovel, and the original english VA for Minmei singing during the action scenes. Because, you know, adaptations these days are barely faithful to the source material. But here's hoping for the best. |

| I never liked how the SDF-1 could turn into a giant robot. That always struck me as being impractical. And also, my memory is a bit hazy, it would lose the ability to use its super cannon in robot form, so I didn't see the point of this.

+20 Internets | Is this show actually good? I just downloaded all of them remastered a few months ago and have been wondering if I should invest the weeks of my life to watch it all

Macross may be the best fucking series ever. EVER. Then again I was like 9 when it aired. But my 9 year-old persona is never wrong. NEVER. Though I have to say I'm really disappointed at this news. Robotech is serious business and Tobey is not an actor. edit: Brad Pitt: Fokker (esp since he dies by minute 6) Last edited by Jait : 09-07-2007 at 06:27 PM.

Storywise it's basically a giant space opera, lots of characters, an extremely detailed universe and a decent though cheesy at many times story. Robotech is like UO or EQ is to an old fan, it's where many saw their first robot space battle and fond memories persist. Though I am a nerd and have all the DVDs compared to a lot of the anime on offer today it is probably a B+ or A- (B- if you hate the idol character archtype) depending on what floats your boat. It's a serious anime so no humour.

+20 Internets | I started one episode once upon a time, I figured it was so highly raved due to the timeframe in which it came out. I figured most people were really young when they saw it and it was one of the first of it's kind so had the EQ factor as you put it
