There's like a handful of Asian actors making American movies and I agree with you, they all suck cock. Let's not judge the whole fucking continent on Shanghai Noon and Margrette Chow though, k?

Uh, yeah. Great question. There's about what, maybe five asian actors most people could even name PERIOD. How about I just ask who the best Egyptian actors are...

Jackie Chan. He's been in some entertaining movies. Let's face it, though, he can't act for shit.

I liked Toshiro Mifune in Red Sun.

Fat ownz. But except for CTHD, i havent really liked anything he's done since Hard Boiled. He's a great actor and it shows in movies like The Killer, A Better Tomorrow and a few others i forget the titles of. But a movie like The Killer would never get made in the US because it would get an NC-17 or X rating. And in the age of Brittney Spiers no one wants an NC-17 rating because you loose your biggest money making crowd.

The Corrupter was ok. Whalberg helped that movie out a lot too. Plot was kind of thin but when you have to great actors working together it makes up for it. I hate Sorvino and i hated replacement killers. I just wish Hollywood would have the balls to make movies like The Killer.

You know what's cool? How people who don't agree with you, well, they're obviously just ignorant! PWNED!!!

As far as good asian actors go, what about that guy from the big hit..the jackass, is he asian? He kinda looks asian. He's an OK actor I guess.

Again on the topic of "there's no good asian actors": A good actor is someone you enjoy watching(if you disagree with this, that's fine, but that's your opinion, and it's still not going to convince me that your favourite actor/actress is good if I think he/she isn't). Not someone who wins awards. Not someone who makes the most money(arnold schwarzenegger, anyone?), but someone who you enjoy watching. Now, if someone really hasn't found any asian actors they enjoy watching, it is *perfectly* fair for them to say that they aren't *good* actors. What isn't fair, is for you to say that they're simply wrong, ignorant, etc. I generally tend to agree, however, with the statement that asian actors/actresses generally aren't good. This isn't to say they aren't talented at what they do, but what they do is unfortunately not what I enjoy watching. I'm sure they're big hits among fans of the acting style, but not with me. Just the same, I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't enjoy watching Al Pacino or Edward Norton, people who would say that they aren't good actors.

Lou Diamond Phillips is of Spanish, Scottish/Irish, Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian, and Cherokee ancestry and is born in the Philippines according to imdb.

I guess that makes him a citizen of the world

Muuru? When someone makes a blanket statement like "All Asian Actors suck", they're often wrong. And to make that statement shows ignorance.

Hahahaha

Anyway, a few days ago I expanded my horizons by watching a few of the more popular movies from Asia like Warriors of Zu and some others whose name I can't remember to see if I was being unfair, and what do you know? Not only did the movies suck, the actors sucked too. All of them, by a wide margin. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a movie filled with asians, was noted for its acting, and that still sucked by any real standard. All asian actors, including Chow Yun Fat, can only do 2 things. They can stand around like expressionless statues, and they can also do this concentration looking thing whenever they're giving a big speech, where they look like they're taking a big dump. They suck, they just fucking suck. Watch Kabuki. There's definitive proof right there.

There was a cycle of movies by Tsai Ming Liang ( http://us.imdb.com/Name?Tsai,+Ming-liang ) on TV last month. A friend of mine taped them so it gave me an occasion to see them again. It was The Hole, The River and Vive L'Amour. In every movies the lead actor is Lee Kang Sheng.

Saying that Tsai Ming Liang's cinema does not rely on words would be an understatement and as he is the Pygmalion of Khang Sheng, it's no surprise that he is an incredible actor in the kinetic sense of the word.

A typical Tsai Ming Lian movie will have Lee Kang Sheng caught in odd situations where his body will be challenged. It can be going through a never ending pain and all sorts of therapy like in The River, beatings and madness crisis like in Rebels of the Neon God or contortions and dance like in the Hole. Every time the eye is caught by the oddity of the movements, the inadequacy and fragility that emanates from Khang Sheng's body. It's somewhere between the grotesque and the drama.

I have never seen Lee Khang Sheng in movies not directed my Tsai Ming Liang, but I fear that a lot of this alchemy is based on the ability of the writer/director to create very odd and often very symbolic situations where the body of his actor fits perfectly. Tsai Ming Liang is one of the best director in activity after all…

Btw, the criteria that define the quality of acting greatly differ from an individual to another, of course, but from a culture to another, from an art to another, from a culture to another, but also, in the matter at hand, from a movie to another.

Overacting and gesticulation is the standard for acting in HK comedies for example. At no point there is an attempt at recreating reality. The characters are not here to sound "real", they are only cogs in a machine. Like puppets and cartoon characters they can fall off buildings, get shot in the head or get run over by cars and still be able to run around 2 minutes later. Do all these actors "suck" because you do not like this type of acting? Certainly not, since you are not using the correct set of tools to measure their talent (or lack of talent in some cases). Some are geniuses that can create laughter as soon as they hit the screen to whoever is receptive to this style.

Note that not being receptive to an acting style or another is not a sin in any way. But saying, "I am not receptive to this, therefore it sucks" is a position that is pretty hard to legitimate. Unless you are the universal measure by which good taste is evaluated :P

Yup, Asian cultures have different criteria for good acting. If you weren't moved by the characters and story in CTHD then you're simply a sad person. Good acting doesn't always mean making emotions visible at first glance.

Anyhow, the guy who played Sir Te in CTHD (Sihung Lung, thanks IMDB) is a really good actor. If you haven't seen Eat Drink Man Woman before it's worth watching.
