+13 Internets | Weekend Box Office: Monday, August 27, 2007 Trying to copy Millie's format, and also her dress style, based on what I've picked from her garbage. Adding per screen average because it interests me and I'm the one dumb enough to post this=P 1) Superbad (Sony) - $18,044,069 / 2,948 Theaters / Week 2 / $68,616,643 to date / per screen $6,120 2) The Bourne Ultimatum (Universal) - $12,472,215 / 3,679 Theaters / Week 4 / $185,253,615 to date / per screen $3,390 3) Rush Hour 3 (New Line) - $11,706,643 / 3,408 Theaters / Week 3 / $108,469,646 to date / per screen $3,435 4) Mr. Bean's Holiday (Universal) - $9,889,780 / 1,714 Theaters / Week 1 / $9,889,780 to date / per screen $5,770 5) WAR (Lionsgate Films) - $9,820,089 / 2,277 Theaters / Week 1 / $9,820,089 to date / per screen $4,312 6) The Nanny Diaries (MGM/Weinstein) - $7,480,927 / 2,629 Theaters / Week 1 / $7,480,927 to date / per screen $2,845 7) The Simpsons Movie (Fox) - $4,317,689 / 2,600 Theaters / Week 5 / $173,354,858 to date / per screen $1,660 8) Stardust (Paramount) - $3,872,560 / 2,339 Theaters / Week 3 / $26,374,432 to date / per screen $1,655 9) Hairspray (New Line) - $3,265,384 / 2,016 Theaters / Week 6 / $107,271,846 to date / per screen $1,619 10) The Invasion (Warner Brothers) - $3,093,428 / 2,776 Theaters / Week 2 / $11,468,121 to date / per screen $1,114 --------------------------------------------------------------------- The reason I like the per screen average number is it *really* lets you know how a film performed. As long as you're comparing wide release films. And it shows where studios fucked up or mis-estimated. IE: Mr. Bean far out-earned Nanny Diaries and WAR. Or you can see that Superbad did not add a single theater from last week when it totally should have. If they pushed it to 3500 screens it would have been over 21 million for it's second week. If they'd had it at that wide a release for week one it would have been near 40 million opening weekend. 2nd biggest gross ever for an R-rated teen comedy. Of course I'm not privy to any insider type info, just going by the numbers. Anyways, these be the numbers, woulda posted earlier but I was off watching Balls of Fury...

| I would guess it has something to do with the almost non-existent marketing or buzz surrounding it compared to other movies that are still around and kicking in theaters.

+13 Internets | Things that struck me immediately were 1) Superbad is a cash cow. It's gonna hit ~100m, and was 20m to produce. There's can't be many wide releases that return 5x production cost. 2) Mr. Bean seems to have massively over-performed most expectations. God knows how or why, but I think it did. Someone with better info than me would have to let us know what it was projected to make, but per screen and total it finished well above what I expected. 3) I really hope the Rogan crew of people keeps cranking out movies. Drillbit Taylor is the next related thing coming out(Rogan co-writer). Looks more kiddie, but still funny. Virgin/Knocked Up/Superbad are pretty much the funniest things to come out of Hollywood in the last few years. And they all did good financially to boot.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read: probably not a big opening box office impact, but gonna keep it from having any staying power either.

+6 Internets | I just finished reading Coraline, also by Neil Gaiman who wrote Stardust, it's a really good book. Apparently it has been due to be made into a film by the same guy who made James and the Giant Peach and Nightmare Before Christmas and that would be fucking amazing, the book is perfect for a movie like that. But Stardust performing poorly makes me sad and think they won't make it;( They should make American Gods too but something tells me they would fuck that all up. |
