Just got back from it, was a good action flick. Not overly concerned with it not being exactly like how ST was, because if it was I wouldnt have wasted time to go see it. Going by theater reaction, seemed most everyone enjoyed it too.

Wow, great movie. I came out of the show feeling a lot like I felt leaving the theater for Iron Man last year... thinking that was WAY damn better than I expected. They took a lot of risks and came out ahead on most of them. The movie was cast perfectly, but the new Capt Kirk really carried it.

Fucking awesome movie. This is the best thing they've ever done with the franchise.

This is definitely a Batman Begins for Star Trek - the old stuff is just cheesy garbage and I'm thankful for a reboot.

Don't feed the Dumar btw, he has a mission from god to shit up and troll ever thread he ever posts in.

Was great. Only weak points for the group that I saw it with was something about Checkov being a little over the top with the accent, and someone has a case of OCD when it comes to lens flares.

I'd have to agree with Dumar, on some level. That scene where (and I apologize for not knowing/caring enough to find out her name) that linguistics chick took off her clothes was random and out of place. It just came off as a pathetic grab at ratings from people with an IQ of ~80. There was a handful of stuff in this movie which was in very poor taste. That being said, and despite the various small things (wtf... simon pegg?) that I didn't like about the movie, I still thought it was awesome, and walked away from it wanting to see more of it, which has never been the case with Star Trek and myself.

Unfortunately, all that really means is that they're taking a shit all over something people have cherished by changing it. I understand why some would hate this movie.

Oh, and I saw it in a new theatre that opened today. Digital projector, badass sound. Was very impressed.

It had a 26mil opening day and has done 33mil in 29 hours, but man our theater was nowhere close to even halfway sold out. 10:10 showing, first since 2 8pm showings started... was kinda surprised.

Box Office: Abrams’ Star Trek Goes Where No Trek Has Gone Before: $33M in 29 Hours | /Film

yeah, i'm a troll and nerd raging because i want to see smart entertainment and stories with characters that make me think, reflect, and even sometimes try to better myself. negs to me for wanting directors and storytellers to challenge my mind and not only explore 'strange, new worlds' but humanity and its relationship in the universe and within as a people.

no, i should want all of it to be highly marketable and highly consumable: show as much sex appeal, bland plots, and cg kewl action as possible. this is what makes money, so everything has to be retarded down to this level, even one series that for a portion of its life and according to its creators vision, for a time attempted to show and be the very opposite. not anymore, it's now able to be marketed and consumed by everyone.

for the sequel, i hope they re-envision tng as a prequel. we'll have picard as the young go-getter (drive another vehicle off a mountain? maybe this time it can be his dad's vineyard), data can be a simple robot to provide comedy relief, and we can have riker and troy fucking in the turbo lift. maybe tasha yar can join in.

gene roddenberry is rolling over in his grave and crying in heaven.

If you knew nothing about Star Trek, then this movie was mediocre, at best. Surprisingly the acting was probably the best part about it, its a damn shame the actors were used as bridges, old creaky bridges that you try to rush over, for special effects sequences. The special effects were well done, but wow, seriously, Abrams needs a new lighting guy. That bridge was fucking blinding me.

However my biggest complaint

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Bad story telling. The only reasons this movie was decent was because of the CGI and acting, the story telling was absolutely abysmal. It felt disjointed, rushed, poorly explained...Every time they got me to suspend disbelief a scene would come along and scream "bullshit".

For example, him going from recruit, to captain, in what, 2 days? I understand more time probably passed but they did such a poor job of showing that. Everything just seemed shit piled together so they could try and get to the next action sequence or emotional feel good/tear jerker sequence faster. Litterally it was like watching a bunch of trailers/previews strung together by comedic relief.

Honestly, it felt like a Michael Bay movie...I really expected a lot better direction/story telling from Abrams.

From a nerd point of view....
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
A super nova destroying the Galaxy? This is supposed to be Sci-Fi right? Seriously, why do technobabbles about black hole singularities if you're going to use this as your *main plot device*.

Also, a simple mining vessel? Ok--Spocks ship was said to be "one of the fastest every constructed" (His words) and it gets caught by a mining freighter?

Sorry, pet peeve of mine when Sci-Fi or fantasy can't even follow its own BS, but its not something I would say the movie was crap over, just minor annoyances.

Lastly, if you're a fan of Start Trek, you should probably just make believe this movie doesn't exist, because JJ Abrams just took a shit on your favorite franchise.

If you're not a fan, or only catch the shows when they are on, its a decent movie. Nothing to write home about, but you won't feel like you got robbed by giving up 2 hours of yours life.

There's no bigger fan than James T. Jait, so kindly go fuck yourself with a rusty tire-iron, and if you survive I hope you get cancer in your eyeballs.

This movie fucking owns. The only complaint I have is I want more now.
