Yeah this movie was badass. Haven't seen any Trek before this movie and I was really entertained. Extra plus was finding out my old regular theater had a new IMAX inside of it.

this is an average movie at best. it's chronicles of riddick with the name star trek glued on; exactly as i thought it would be.

there was just too much inconsistency about everything. kirk being promoted from midshipman to capt of the flagship in a day? okay.

this wasn't star trek in any sense of the word.. really, it's a bad space opera, alright action movie. which is great for the teeny bopsters i guess.

oh, and stop pushing the lens flair button please.

ps, the worst tragedy is probably spock and uhura.

I was going to say that earlier. Some of the music was similar. I also want to say there were other similarities with LOST namely:

All of the time travel stuff was very LOSTish. Especially Spock meeting Spock. It reminded me of last week when there were two Lockes and Locke was telling Richard what to say to his past self. One other LOST aspect was the fact that everyone was "connected" and eventhough history was changed everyone still found a way to to be together and fulfill their destiny such as Kirk finding Scotty in the middle of nowhere on some ice planet, Locke would have called this fate.

I do have a random question/thought:

Sorry I am a Star Trek noob so bear with me in my explination: This was not really a prequel was it? I went into it thinking it was a prequel but it was more of a redux. The whole thing really started in the future with spock and the romulans and they got sent back into time when they went through the black hole. Then they changed history. The romulans destroyed that spock planet and Kirk's father was killed. Kirk grew up as a fatherless kid and was a rebel/troublemaker. This was different the the previous Star Trek history where Kirk's dad saw him graduate from starfleet. Also Spock's mother was alive and was in several Star Trek episodes but in this change of the past she dies. Thus history has been changed/altered. Yes, the Star Trek crew might still be going down similar paths but there were changes in their history so their encounters in Star Trek 2 or 3 could be different from encounters they would have had right? Plus based on their different pasts they might make different decisions that they once would have. So this is technically a redux right and not an actual prequel?

it's not star trek. it's an action movie with the star trek name. characters no more resemble the original as barney the dinosaur.

I don't know how they could have possibly made it more obvious than when spock stands on the bridge and says this in the movie.

I saw this today at the 4k projection theater in Austin the Alamo Village. Nothing like a Fireman's #4 and a movie to start the day off. I again saw it for work at a normal theater and damn the difference in visual quality is startling. I could read everything on the monitors, screens w/e.

I thought it was a great reworking of Kahn. the cast felt perfect. Its hard to pick out one performance out of them all that i liked the most. Bones or Chekov maybe.

Whatever the case I say bring on the Klingon.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I'm fairly certain, given the fact that everyone knows it was a Romulan ship that took out those Klingon ships (47 something?) the next movie is probably going to be premised on some kind of war situation between the Klingons, Romulans, and Federation.

Plus, now that they said, quite literally, that this version of Star Trek is taking place in an alternate universe they can pretty much do whatever they want with the storyline without having to worry too much about continuity.

What? How do you always manage to outdo yourself in stupidity? I don't get it.

Every single character was very similar to their older counterpart; I swear to god you act stupid just to be stupid.

The GF and I were not big fans. The casting other than Chekov was good and the plotting and cinematography was fine but it just felt like a fanfic; every single trek cliche besides "nuclear wessels" was in the movie. I dunno, I am not even a huge fan and there was a dozen nits I could pick out, but besides that the horrible retconning and blatant moneygrab that this movie was just kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. Wasn't horrible, but pay $10 only if you are expecting a popcorn summer movie.

Are you seriously bashing new movies because you're upset that you can't stuff money into the industry's pockets to watch the exact same shit you've already seen in a different decade because you're too lazy to watch reruns? The Coyote vs. Road Runner marketing plan?
