+15 Internets | Paprika It's anime by...some dude. I'm only posting it because while watching this I couldn't help but feel pity for the poor people that will go in tripping on acid or shrooms and leave the theater with an exploded head. Hell I felt mild cranial pressure just watching the trailer and I'm not on anything more powerful than citric acid from the orange I ate an hour ago. |

| I think it looks cool just cuz it would be freaky. No clue what it's about but the pure visual aspect of it interests me.

| Wow, this looks interesting. I loved Paranoia Agent, and I can definitely tell it was made by the same people. The music even sounds crazy. I just hope it isn't limited release like ALL anime movies are and make me drive an hour+ to get to a theater that plays it. I've been dying to see some quality stuff on the big screen for awhile. edit : its limited, damnit.

+4 Internets | After seeing the trailer I added Paranoia Agent to my Netflix queue. Are the episodes really short? It's four discs but it's listed as only being 100 minutes long. Also, what should I check out next after I finish Paranoia Agent? |

I'll admit, it caught my eye. I'll most likely go see it, if anything, just to support more anime being released in the theaters.

That said: If Hitchcock was a japanese anime director he would have made Perfect Blue. Tokyo Godfathers is a christmas movie done right (good laughter + a little tears for good measure) with a very atypical animation style for a japanese film: almost Bill Plymtonesque with the facial mobility of the characters. Millenium Actress is a bittersweet journey in the memories of an old actress. | |

+32 Internets | I saw Paprika at the last film festival. It was a really fun movie and quite trippy. Some WTF moments, ending was something of a let down though, I won't spoil it. Overall the movie was good for about 90% of it but the ending was sort of a punch in the face that left you wondering if they just did it for the WTFSAUCE value. Some very sweet animation sequences though. It's something like a Ghost in the Shell-esque modern day sci-fi/fantasy mystery. I recommend watching it if you get the chance. |

| Paprika was ok, wasn't too trippy for me, I thought it was going to be a trippy as flick but it wasn't, maybe I hype myself up to much. The user above has it right on about the ending, the ending was a big let down and a cop out. How many times do I have to see these happy doodle endings? Save yourself the time and just dl it off the torrent sites. |

+16 Internets | Many good things in this movie. First, it offers a pretty interesting perspective on fiction by litteraly linking different media with one another. Then there is the always cool cinephile touch (sorry guys: great ending) spiced with a little meta-discourse (the cop talking about the film-making of his dreams), pretty impressive animation work and once again a great exploration of the narrative and editing possibilities of animation film. Still, it left me a little unsatisfied, mainly because the storytelling is not very good, or rather not fitting the story well. Since the story by itself is allready pretty confusing, doing a proper exposition instead of a shortened eliptic one would probably have been better to get us interested in the main plot that, ultimately, we don't really care about in the current form. On a side note it's the same Director/Writter/Composer combo than Paranoia Agent and I must say all three seem pretty crazy. I have the Paranoia Agent score in my little winamp playlist and Paprika's will join it as soon as I make the effort to find it. EDIT: And thanks Zarcath for the link (it will most certainly never get released around here and even if it does, the last anime to reach us - Tales of Earthsea zzzzzzzzz - was only screened in a dubbed version). | Definitely my favorite Satoshi Kon effort. He's been riding his arthouse success for the last few years and we were treated to some live-action wtfbombs but this movie is more a nod to his roots. I almost missed out on the limited theatrical release, but that Jin-Roh discussion in the FSR thread reminded me of it. Came out last year (and so you can download it easily enough) but it's most definitely worth catching on screen if you have the chance, it's making the rounds right now and is still playing in Chicago. The soundtrack is also on Teslakite (Susumu Hirasawa) who's worked with Kon for a long time and did the excellent Paranoia Agent soundtrack. EDIT: The movie STILL has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes even after almost a year. Last edited by Khorum : 06-17-2007 at 01:11 PM. |

| i just finished to watch it 2 words: holy shit. im an anime fan. i have watched animes since mazinger and kenshiro. many dvds of the best japan animation. but this.... this is the most incredible anime experience i have ever seen. Its like Matrix meets Eternal sunshine meets 13th floor meets Muholland Drive, using real actor movies as someone said, the ending is a bit letdown (the giant black dude) but everything before that is pure cinematographic orgasm i would give my own money to take it just like it is, and make it with live actors the trailer says it all: the japanese animation is skyrocking, while our cinema (not only animation) is paralized in mediocrity
