+43 Internets | I missed that post about Xenophon, but the same Author who wrote "The Last King", which I posted above, wrote a story called The Ten Thousand, which is about Xenophon. Another great book of his is about Atilla. I keep tellin' you all, read his stuff. |

| The use of the greek phalanx was, indeed, a long dead concept by the time Julius Caesar was around. It only appeared similar because armies of the time were still mostly foot soldiers marching in ranks bearing shields, in combat the professional roman army was more flexible on the battle field, with multiple cohorts of a larger size than would have been possible to maintain a solid phalanx wall. If you like military history stuff, the history of the roman army over the centuries is one of the most fascinating things you can read about.
