Because Manhattan doesn't care.

"Why would I save a world I no longer have any stake in."

He cared just enough to kill a man he's known and worked with for years, reinforcing how little he cares for the overrated phenomenon of life.

When Ozymandius asks him whether or not his planned worked, and what he did was right, Manhattan says

"Nothing ever ends"

And disappears, leaving a small smoke trail that looks like a mushroom cloud inside the globe he was standing in.

Staying implies a couple things. First that he thinks the human race is worth saving, which he didn't. Not because he despised them or thought they should be destroyed, but because they were so insignificant. Like a worm shriveling in the sun, getting caught out in the open after it rained.

Second, that Ozymandius' plan could possibly work, which he didn't.


"A live body and a dead body contain the same number of particles. Structurally, there's no discernible difference. Life and death are unquantifiable abstracts. Why should I be concerned?"

"I've walked across the sun. I've seen events so tiny and so fast they hardly can be said have occurred at all, but you... you are a man. And this world's smartest man means no more to me than does its smartest termite."

It's one of those changes that seems small but that were not only unnecessary, but eviscerate much of the point and theme of the story.

I hope it's not true, and still plan to see it on opening day. But it's quite unfortunate if it is real. And it will be one of those things, if everything else in the film was great, where you just sorta shake your head at.

Yes, Ozy blows up the power stations worldwide. But instead of "blackmailing" Manhattan & the others to keep quiet (and then Manhattan leaves Earth), Ozy instead "blackmails" Manhattan to stay as global boogeyman - phrasing it as the USA & the USSR will play nice or Manhattan will kill everyone.

So the USA & USSR still ally against a common enemy, but this way it is one that is actually present.

goddamnit motherfucker cocksucker. I could understand him changing the squid to something else, but making Ozy some kind of hero instead of a mass murderer, thus destroying the whole subtext of the entire fucking story is a fucking disgrace. Goddamn fucking hollywood piece of shit.

For those that have trouble getting it, ozy killing NY acomplished nothing good. When the journal became public the US and Russia would have gone back to the cold war (until they sorted out things themselves, like they did in real life) and ozy would have become the worlds #1 enemy. The moral of the fucking story is that superheros would have made history worse than it actually was, and the only ones that can save us are ourselves.
