Requiem for a Dream

Since I (and I'm sure plenty of others) use this board as a reference for what to rent, I just watched this movie... and all I can say is what the fuck? One seriously screwy movie, wasn't anything like I thought it would be. But the message it conveys is quite clear: drugs fuck you up. Bad.

Any thoughts on the movie? I found it fairly entertaining, even though it had some quite odd/disturbing parts (think last 10 minutes of the movie, especially the "group" thing).

One of the best movies of 2000 no doubt. Movies the calliber of Requiem are on average a once a year affair or even every two years.

I really enjoyed it, and normally I don't like "artsy" kind of films really, generally I just like the standard pointless drivel movies. The movie really leaves a lasting impression in your head, there is no doubt about it.

first time through i was kind of turned off but intrigued enough to watch it again. after the second viewing i realized more what the director was trying to show.

the emotion behind the addictions is more important than what they are addicted to; whether its drugs or coffee it was the need to escape their current reality that drove them deeper into the addiction.

also storyline aside, the use of very subtle special effects was very well done. while some are obvious (the killer fridge) it was the little things like when the moms face shrinks a tiny bit in the hospital and other easily over looked effects that caught my eye.

over all, a very good movie; if you can stomach the darker side of human addiction.

and on another note, this is a movie id like to see more parents showing their kids. they are going to see things like this on their own (i can name most of those characters haveing shown up in my own life in one form or another). this is the type of education that is hidden from youth today.

This might be the best directed movie of all time imo. The acting is amazing, especially from Ellen Burstyn; hell, even Marlon Wayans does a solid job.

It's not about drugs as most people tend to think. It is about the psychology behind it all, how easy it is to lose yourself while trying to find your dream, hence -- requiem for a dream. It is very disturbing, but very real.

Last semester, I made my abnormal psyche professor watch the movie. Every semester, he's been showing his class One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest, but he decided to start showing them Requiem for a Dream from now on. I was :~)

a lot of people dont catch that it isnt just about drugs like you guys mentioned, luckily the back of the dvd sort of explains the main idea of the movie(if any of you actually have the case, check it). this same director also did Pi, which is pretty strange too, but for different reasons. the use of black and white in that movie worked out real well.... honestly the best overall black and white movie ive seen.

I really don't understand why so many people think this is such a great movie (42 on IMDB's top 250?). The basic idea of the movie that drugs are bad, drugs mess you up, so on and so forth is nothing new and gets driven into the ground. Visually the movie was nice and the shots where they do drugs were cool the first few thousand times but tends to get pretty old. Overall nothing in the movie struck me as being spectacular. Semi-entertaining, but deffinetely not something I'd bother watching again.

Oh, and I'm deffinitely tired of people talking about the ass2ass scene.

if the only thing people are talking with you about is the ass2ass scene than their missing a large part of the point. you can rent any lesbo porno and get a much clearer view of that show cased.

and having only watched it once, i can see where you think its all about "drugs". its not; its addiction, human emotion, and the raw pain we will put ourselves through to achieve dreams that are sometimes unobtainable.

it took me more than once watching it to really appreaciate the actors ability to display that and the directors vision beyond the drug/porn visuals.

if you watch it again, disect the performances and the story and youll understand why people like this movie. or better yet, get the directors cut and listen to the commentary than watch it again.

I know the movie has deeper meaning, and I can see where some people would find this movie enjoyable. I got sidetracked, but I meant for the point of my post to be: Do you really consider this to be one of the greatest films of all time? Granted the IMDB list is nothing to really gage greatness by, but still I don't think this movie should be anywhere near the top of the list.

whats the IMDB list?
- i tend to avoid most movie sites outside of this one.

as for it being one of the best movies of all time; eh, guess that depends on what your comparing it to. within its theme/genre i think its one of the best. but i tend to catagorize things in my own way before comparing them.

to me it falls under Tragic-Drama; and i dont see alot others in that sub catagory that compare to it.

personally i dont cross compare things outside of genre (action vs comedy, etc)

Ellen Burstyn was amazing in that film. At the end of the movie the way she clicks her teeth is absolutely grating.
