Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (new thread).

Used the search function for the old thread on this; couldn't find it (or I'm simply a retard).

Can't watch now, but I'd nut instantly if they ever finished the Sentinels, then made a good 6-10 hour series out of the final book, Closing the Circle (or whatever it was called, either way it ruled).

From someone who has never heard of Robotech, this looks lame as hell.

Are you kidding? I'm not a robotech fan in the least but how can you not have heard of it? Unless you were born after 1985 or something I'm almost positive everyone has heard of it or its japanese name Macross.

It does look kinda lame, especially since it's Harmony-motherfucking-Gold (think DISNEY remaking Princess Mononoke without Miyazaki just to milk the franchise only because they own the American license).

I bought a bunch of the original series in boxed sets (I believe Macross through Masters, but not the Next Gen or whatever it was called), and they definitely have NOT aged well at all. Compared to the animation we see these days, it's pretty weak. But compare Robotech to any other animated shows in the early 80's, and it blows them away.

I attended a panel at A-Kon last year where they were promoting it, and while the basics looked good, they were diverging heavily from the book (which already diverged from the American tv, which diverged from the anime) so really, there's no rules here any more, and it's time to judge it on merit alone. That said, while the voice acting will be as good as you can expect, I am not so convinces about the writing. Animation is top notch though.

Hell yeah. I'm old enough to have seen Robotech, but Mechwarrior > Robotech.

Honestly, the only way to make a non-sucky Robotech movie is to make it a live action film with tons of special effects. Animated or purely CGI SCI-FI films don't do well. As examples, FF was terrible and Titan A.E. was equally awful.

My hope is that the Transformers movie kicks ass because that could usher in several new live action mech movies.

Were the books any good? I never read them. And after a, brief, conversation with Carl Macek at WorldCon I basically gave up on ever seeing the SDF3, the end of the Sentinels, etc.

I don't know. It has a good story, I think a redone Robotech would go over well in American TV at the moment if it was done right. Particularly redoing Southern Cross would make me really happy, since the mech designs in it were awful and the whole story in it was bizarre since 12+ episodes got cut due to funding issues.

Well, do you realize that the three original series (Macross, Masters, and Next Generation) were actually not even a contigious series? They were all originally released in Japan as unrelated shows, I believe. But then they added scenes, removed stuff, changed character names, dialogue, and so on to make them one long contigious series in the US. That's why the mech designs vary so much from one series to the other (and each involves a completely different alien race).

The Sentinels was really the first of the series that was created from scratch as part of the Robotech saga. I could be totally wrong on the above, but that's what I've read in the past.

Yes, I think they were. Now, I was in about grade 5 when I read the Macross and Sentinels book series, along with the final book that tied them together with the Masters and Next Generation series (which I never read, and come to think of it I never really saw the animated series for them either). So I can't guarantee that they're awesome books. They're pulp sci-fi really, the writing's probably not the greatest (but better than Dan Brown), but the storyline for the Sentinels was actually extremely good I thought. I'd say it's easily worth picking up the five books, along with Closing the Circle (or whatever the final book was called). They're not very long reads, and like I said the overall story is quite good. And quite a bit of fucked up stuff happens. It's a damn shame that the series was never completed, but in some ways I can see why. It's quite a bit darker than the Macross saga (not sure about Masters or NG).

I'm aware, yeah. Carl Macek is the guy who did all the editting/writing when they got brought over to the US and made them one big series. He's the one who said he wanted to add a bunch of stuff to Southern Cross to have it make more sense and keep the mech designs consistent. Which is why I think redoing it would work so well, because you could fix all the weird shit about the stories and just have this awesome intergalactic war that slowly builds up through four generations. ^.^

Actually, Carl Macex was not the writer of the series, just the books. The End of the Circle is the only thing that is his alone.
