New sci-fi film in production, helmed by James Cameron. Considered one of "the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood". Apparently, Cameron has been waiting for technology to catch up so he can have photo realistic CG aliens. I'm excited.

I think there are legitimate reasons to look forward to this one.

After getting Aliens on dvd for christmas, and watching all the "making of" stuff with cameron, I was blown away by how skilled a filmmaker the guy is. I didn't love Titanic, but this is getting back to his sci-fi action roots, and from the guy who gave us Terminator, Aliens, Abyss...I'm excited anyway.

No worse than seeing news that Sony greenlit Spider-man 3 back in 2004. Or that the script for Indiana Jones 4 has been written and rewritten for much longer. In the scheme of things we're only looking at just over two years before release, which is about on par with most heavy effects movies these days.

How can you not be excited about this? Cameron has some truely quality work behind him, and was the director behind multiple movies on my list of best sci fi movies of all time, including the holder of the number 1 spot, and the best sci-fi action movie of all time: Aliens. This man hasn't ever failed to deliver- so I can get excited about this.

Not to mention the fact that he has waited for the right technology to come out before making this movie and has been willing to continually push it back until he gets it right.

I've been following this movie for a while, at least whenever reports crop up about it. It's interesting to note that last time there was movement on it, I think around 5 years ago, the projected budget was 400m which was just prohibitively expensive, even for Cameron, and no studio would risk that much. I assume that technology has advanced enough that that budget is now closer to 200m, and much more realistic figure.

He is planning on working on Battle Angel as Avatar goes into post-production. Quoted from interview

Quote:
Harry – Now, while your doing the Visual Effects work on this, will you be doing any work on BATTLE ANGEL..

Jim – Probably, Yeah, I’ll probably be sliding into PRE on Battle Angel during that time, it’s hard for me to know, until I’ve gone through the process to know what my time management is going to be capable of. You know, if I spend 5 hours a day doing Visual FX, which is probable, that will leave me time to do Battle Angel.

If it winds up being 8 hours a day. NO. But I can’t answer that for right now. I’m hoping to telescope Pre on Battle Angel into post on Avatar. Which has always been the plan.
