Underated actors. I just rented Meet Joe Black, and I tell you, every time I see him in a movie I gain more respect for Bradd Pitt. Originally I blew him off as a no talent 'pretty boy' cause all the girls go crazy for him. But honestly he's a really fucking good actor. I mean his range is incredible. Sure, you may be going "he's a major star, how is he underated??" I think alot of people just think he's a star cause of his pretty boy status, but I'd said he's one of the top 5 best actors at the moment, and I'm talking raw talent not selling power. To round out that top 5, and this is just a personal opinion in no particular order: Edward Norton, Tom Hanks (duh..), Kevin Spacey, and Anthony Hopkins. So I'd like to hear some other people's opinion of their favorite actors (no actresses just to keep it simple). One of the key criteria needs to be their ability to defy typecasting. I think Robert De Niro is a great actor, but if I see him in anything other then a toughguy/mobster role, it doesn't fit.

Underrated or favorite? If we're talking range, I think Mel Gibson, Edward Norton, Kevin Spacey, Billy Bob Thornton and Al Pacino take the cake. I completely disagree about De Niro too. If you think he only fits the tough guy/mobster role, you've never seen Taxi Driver.

actually, your right I haven't. I probably shouldn't have used De niro since I've only seen a handful of his movies, but he was the first good actor I could think of that generally gets typecast. What kinda role does he play in taxi driver btw? A taxi driver? If so is he a sensitive guy, funny guy etc..

| brad pitt indeed has come a long way since his early movies. id hardly call him underated though, when 12 monkeys came out, sure, he was still underated. but hes been less and less pretty boy and more of a top rated actor from fight club on. with films like snatch highlighting his versatility and seven years in tibet showing off his range, i expect to be seeing many more enjoyable movies from him; even if a few of them flop like the mexican (which i personally think was interesting and funny, it just didnt do well in theater sales) he has had alot of experience though, and the best works of his 20 year career have come in the last 5: Quote:

Edward Norton is one of the best actors of our time. It's not that he's underated, it's just that he gets no roles. He hasn't ever been in a "huge" blockbuster movie, and the guy has to be one of the most amazing actors I've ever seen.

yea shamus it is. It's also a combination of your favorite actors tho. But I meant underrated as in, they aren't as popular as they should be considering their talent. Sure, the real movie critics know how good they are, but the general public doesn't realize their talent. Like Xenox put it, Edward Norton is a great actor but he doesn't have big roles. He probably makes alot less per movie then say, Vin Diesel does now. It's cause of this I didn't list Mel Gibson or Tom Cruise, they are big blockbusters and they should be. They deserve to be big stars, they are good actors (tho tom cruise's range isn't as great as the others i've listed, the roles he can play he pulls off perfectly imo.). I just wish I could look at the top 10 money making actors and say 'yes.. I think those are the best actors around right now'.

I always liked Kevin Bacon but for some reason he never made it as far as the other guys from that generation. I donīt think Steve Buscemi is underrated, but he doesnīt seem to be fully accepted in Hollywood either. Sylvester Stallone is underrated in a weird way. He is a great actor when given a decent character, but wasted 15 years or something doing Rambo versions and silly comedy. Cop Land and the first Rocky movie should be enough to keep him away from the sellout action genre.
