I find this practice invasive and pernicious, particularly because I have to put up with advertising in nearly every domain of life nowadays, and when it also takes over my alleged 'entertainment', it really gets on my nerves. I just don't enjoy being treated like a consumer at every possible turn, especially when doing so compromises the integrity of a scene. Given that this is a MBay movie, I can expect this to happen routinely and that turns me off in advance.
Okay.. Where in the trailer do you see that? The only way I know they are Chevys is because... well.. I recognize them!

And just for you:

Which scenes in the movie do you feel advertised too much, and how would they be changed so as to not advertise them?

Okay, here is a simple example.

Remember how Bumblebee used to be a VW bug?

What is he now? A Chevy Camaro.

Why? Because Chevy paid a bunch of money to have their product placed and illustrated in the movie.

I don't have time to grab screen captures at the moment but I can guarantee with every ounce of my soul that you will have 3-7 closeups of the gleaming Chevy logo periodically throughout the flick. When you remember that nothing in a movie nowadays is accidental, these shorts really start to get on your nerves.

No No. they get on YOUR nerves. My disbelief is suspended due to the fact I am watching a movie about cars and shit turning into giant robots! YEE HA!

Yup. Fair enough. You are lucky that you don't notice these things. They bug the hell out of me and once you start identifying them, there is no turning back.

Anyway, so look at the long trailer. After the tag "Some Will Come To Defend Us", there is a shot of the vehicles tearing down a desert highway. Right then, they stick in a completely unrelated closeup of a gleaming Chevy logo, with the sun shinning off the grill just like any other commercial. It isn't a mistake, it isn't incidental, it is just a blatent advertising technique.

Now, to be sure, if you just don't see this for what it is, than that's cool and you will probably enjoy the movie more than me. But once this stuff starts to show up *as* advertising, it really starts to ruin the fun.

I am so sorry... I mean i do notice movies and if they are using Apple computers or Dell stuff. but really, it is a way for the movie to make back some of it's advertising budget.

it's business, it's life, it's reality.

People have shown time and time again that if you don't make shitty movies you will make money. People will go see them.

The product placement and advertising in movies is getting retarded, coupled with the fact that you have to sit through even more ads at the theater. It will get to the point where the only movies that we will be able to see with out ad's are high fantasy movies.

Hell im even god damn suprised that Sam didn't pull out a red bull when they begin to climb Mt Doom and say "Here Mr. Frodo it gives you wings".

Yeah - basically, I can understand the motivations for doing this kind of advertising, and I accept that it is indeed current reality. But I would prefer if it wasn't like this, and remember a time when indeed this was not the norm.

A good counterpoint is the famous movie 'Bullit'. I mean, EVERYONE, knows that Steve McQueen is tearing around in a Mustang (68 Fastback I think) while being chased by a 69 Charger. But it was done in a way without the film-makers feeling like they had to stuff the brand in our faces at every possible turn. 'Here's a MUSTANG and here's a CHARGER...you can BUY ONE TOO!!!'

It was, to use a dangerous term, much more artistic (i.e. it maintained integrity with the whole of the movie and wasn't gratuitous). That is the kind of thing I miss nowadays. To use Mythas's phrase, its just getting retarded

not entirely true. VW would not allow them to use the new beetle. Something along the lines of VW not wanting their brand associated with war/violence.

No.. Chevy made a deal with the producers to have all the good guys in the transformer movie be Chevys.

What's more, Bumblebee will start out as a 1970 Camaro, will get owned by the bad guys at some point of the plot and than be rebuild as the new 2008/2009 Camaro. Check here

That's an advertising deal set and done, long before VW (lacking a hollywood lobby) could do anything about it. If they put out some blurb about not being associated with war/violence, it was only to save face.

I don't give a fuck what car maker is highlighted in the movie as long as it is badass. Yeah, I am not jumping for joy that Bumblebee is different, but it won't hinder my ability to enjoy the movie as long it .. kicks ass.

This movie could be a goddamn 2 hour long Chevy commercial and I wouldn't care as long as shit's getting blown up and giant fucking machines destroying city blocks.

Bring it on.
