I hope it is severely changed. Transformers was a C grade cartoon from the 80s specifically designed to sell toys.

Poor plots, poor animation, etc. The only reason WHY it was half enjoyable was robots kicking the crap out of each other. And, you know, it was marketed to 8 year old kids who didn't have crap for brains at the time. Therefore, the old 80s standby, "moral lesson from main character to appease mommy follow by exhortations to buy toys" has taken on a realty of its own. Y'know, I hate all the varied definitions of pomo, but fuck, if people's memory doesn't fit the bill, I don't know what does.

Heresy? Go download an episode, forget that childhood naivete, and watch.

If Bay has big robots kicking the shit out of each other, one side good, one side bad, he's taken all that's worthwhile from the original cartoon.

What's funny is all the people crying over Michael Bay when Transformers the cartoon itself couldn't hold a candle to that hack except through childhood reminsinces. At least michael bay will get the important parts, the robots, the explosions, etc., which may sadden the people who saw "optimus prime as john wayne (roflroflrofl)". But no contemporary movie goers nor those who have a more rational memory of their childhood will be unsurprised that prime doesn't bust out some Kant or Mill to explain the moral shortcomings of his opponents and his deeper motivations to do what is right.

edit: Oh and "faithful designs" to the original would look like complete and utter shit. New models are way better.

You do know that when they were doing the voice sessions for the original cartoon, the actor was instructed to think of John Wayne, right?

Just because your father didn't play with you as a kid doesn't mean you have to get pissy here about it.

I actually got to see them filming some scenes on a freeway. I was driving home one day and noticed alot of people, cars, trailers and lights on a section of a freeway that wasnt open to the public yet.

I drove by and saw two of these rescue hummers, a cop car, and they were pulling a cover off of a huge blue, red and chrome big rig. As I stopped on the offramp, I noticed the decepticons emblem on one of the cars and realized what they were filming. I wish I would have had my camera with me that day, because the next day when I did bring my camera to work, all but a few grey and black blown up buses were there.

The only thing that could ruin the pure carnage of this movie is the fucking kids that are ubiquitous throughout the trailer. Teen drama in this movie could kill my raging robot hard on in nanoseconds.

I doubt Michael Bay can surpass the homosexuality that was the little transforming kid in Transformers: The Movie. If we get to see that cool teenager backwalling his hot GF in Bumblebee's backseat, I'm all for it.

Are you suggesting a Bumblebee/Spike tagteam?

That's what seems to be missing. A general respect for the source material. Most of the bots look nothing like their cartoon counterparts. Should they look exactly like them? No, of course not. But most of the sorry excuses they've given us look more like they belong in Virus than Transformers.

That's my objection to the movie. It isn't Transformers. It is a giant robot movie with the Transformer label slapped on it for marketing reasons.

And soundwave will be in the sequel apparently.
Well, he was supposedly in this one but luckily managed to dodge that bullet, so hopefully he can miss any sequel, should we be unfortunate enough to have to suffer that. With luck, this movie will bomb badly, but I doubt that'll happen. It'll have its big opening weekend and then fade away, but that opening weekend will be enough to insure a sequel.

I encourage you to go and look at the Masterpiece editions of Prime and Starscream that were posted earlier in the thread. Movie designs based on those two would BLOW AWAY the current ones.

New models are way better? I don't think I want any of the stuff that you're smoking.

I'll be honest, I like the new models better. While I think they could have done a faithful recreation and it would have looked good....I still like the new ones better. But I'm a sucker for that.

I'm just not a big fan of all their faces.

Anyone besides me ever read any of the Transformers comics? Those had some good storylines and badass fighting, death and destruction...make a movie based off some of those.

I read all the original Marvel Comics. Art was mostly bad, but the storyline was very good. Simon Furman is a good writer.

Nostalgia aside, the new models look way better and actually have "realistic" transformations. Optimus prime looks fucking awesome, and bumblebee looks good too IMO. Only things I don't really like are Megatron's face and Starscream's tiny head.

Gonna' have to agree that the models from the movie look cooler than any of the toys(and I loved Transformers as a kid).
