I'm as puzzled as you are. I haven't read the books in ages, but I don't recall thinking of Tom Bombadil as a "must-have" character.

some say he is the supreme god's avatar. some say he's the incarnation of nature spirit my opinion is his section of LotRs was the most boring part of the entire book and that hardcore fans are insane to spend so much time trying to figure out who he really is /shrug

| I forget how he got Sting. That wasn't really my concern. Nor was the size of his role in the books. Pure and simple, he's just a wild character that I would love to see brought to life. Every time I read the book, I just thought about how random it was for him to appear. I enjoy spontaneity, and most things random. But, also, I recall (perhaps I'm imagining this) Gandalf very briefly going on about the lore of Tom. Saying that he was around when there was nothing else (the first age?), and that he was immensely powerful, no matter his crazy demeanor. All in all, he could be skipped, were a movie to be made, and it wouldn't bother many people, I'm sure. It's just one of those things that I would like to see, personally. Even if he were just a brief character, I'm sure it would elicit a smile from most fans of the book.

+49 Internets | Well Bilbo most definitely gets Sting pre-Mirkwood. Edit: Quick check of Wiki shows he did get it from the trolls. Gandalf also got his sword from the same stash.

+66 Internets | There's a billion theories about Bombadil. The truth is I don't think even Tolkien knew exactly who or what Bombadil was. One that makes sense to me is that he's essentially the personification of the nature spirit. The reality is that even though he's a really cool character in the books and appears to be super powerful, he contributes virtually nothing to the actual narrative of the story and really doesn't have much place in movies, since time is always an issue.
