Evidently he has a really big cult following among fans of the books. Sort of like how Boba Fett became a cult figure after appearing for all of 5 seconds in The Empire Strikes Back.

I'm as puzzled as you are. I haven't read the books in ages, but I don't recall thinking of Tom Bombadil as a "must-have" character.

Ian Holm, Ian McKellan, and Hugo Weaving or I won't be spending a dime on the resulting abomination.

im too lazy to find you the links, but Tom Bombadil is considered by many fans *the* mistery of Middle Earth

some say he is the supreme god's avatar. some say he's the incarnation of nature spirit

my opinion is his section of LotRs was the most boring part of the entire book and that hardcore fans are insane to spend so much time trying to figure out who he really is

Didn't Bilbo give Frodo Sting? And Bilbo got it from the Trolls' cache?

I forget how he got Sting. That wasn't really my concern. Nor was the size of his role in the books. Pure and simple, he's just a wild character that I would love to see brought to life. Every time I read the book, I just thought about how random it was for him to appear.

I enjoy spontaneity, and most things random. But, also, I recall (perhaps I'm imagining this) Gandalf very briefly going on about the lore of Tom. Saying that he was around when there was nothing else (the first age?), and that he was immensely powerful, no matter his crazy demeanor. All in all, he could be skipped, were a movie to be made, and it wouldn't bother many people, I'm sure. It's just one of those things that I would like to see, personally. Even if he were just a brief character, I'm sure it would elicit a smile from most fans of the book.

Well Bilbo most definitely gets Sting pre-Mirkwood.

Edit: Quick check of Wiki shows he did get it from the trolls. Gandalf also got his sword from the same stash.

Tom gives the other hobbits swords, including the one that pierces the Witch King's armor.

I imagine it's mostly, as mentioned, because he's somewhat of a mystery. Tolkien himself said that he was intended to be unknowable. Probably why there's so much of a following because nearly everything else is explained quite in detail.

The reason I like Bombadil is because he holds the ring, puts it on, doesn't disappear, and just sort of chuckles and hands it back to Frodo as a "pretty thing".

Clearly he > Sauron

There's a billion theories about Bombadil. The truth is I don't think even Tolkien knew exactly who or what Bombadil was. One that makes sense to me is that he's essentially the personification of the nature spirit. The reality is that even though he's a really cool character in the books and appears to be super powerful, he contributes virtually nothing to the actual narrative of the story and really doesn't have much place in movies, since time is always an issue.

Sting and Glamdring are from the trolls. I'm almost positive the elven daggers that the other hobbits get are handed to them from Bombadil after he rescues them from the barrow downs, but that the swords weren't his. Rather, they were from the downs/wights whatever lived there, as (if I remember right) the downs was basically a huge, incredibly ancient graveyard from a battle fought long before.

When they are discussing what to do with the Ring, they mention Bombadil. However, they felt that he would be more likely to lose track of it as it didnt really matter to him.

Not Elven. The swords the hobbits got were made my the Witch King's original enemies, which is why is it was so effective against him. "No other blade would've cut as deep" or something to that effect. They were other humans, don't remember which breed. And yeah, they got them from the wight caves after Tom saved them, again.
