Either way, it just showed Legolas so much more during the battle scenes that it gives the impression that he was the better fighter. If they'd spent a bit more time showing Gimli mowing down orcs axe (remember, Legolas gets way ahead due to his bow before Gimli even gets his first kill), it would have made him seem less gimp.

But, I'm biased because I make dwarf fighters in every game I play. They're just too awesome.

At the end of the Battle of Helm's Deep, Gimli's count is 41, the same as Legolas. Gimli is smoking his pipe, sitting on a dead Orc with his axe firmly planted into the Orc's skull. Legolas then draws an arrow and shoots the dead Orc in the head. Gimli asks him what the hell that was for, and Legolas says "That's 42, he was still twitching", to which Gimli replies he was only twitching because his axe was embedded in its brain.

So Gimli -is- as much of a badass as Legolas, he just starts slower. Someone had to be comic relief in the Lord of the Rings movies, and honestly, I'd rather see a good and convincing actor like Rhyes-Davis be that, than Orlando Bloom who is alright as a stuck-up Elf but has trouble showing a wide range of expressions otherwise.

sorry but....fuck comic relief. seriously, fuck them. i have no idea from which idio's mind the idea of comic relief characters came from, but 99% of time it's the worst part of the movie.

A movie can use a funny character like (for example) Hudson in Aliens. Not bufoons like JarJar trashing the movie whenever they appear on the screen

Your comparison to Hudson is interesting. Obviously, if you felt Jackson's treatment of Gimli was comparable to Jar Jar Binks, something is wrong with you. But Hudson was a genuinely good character with some comic relief.. and did he do anything impressive in Aliens?

I remember Hicks killing quite a few Xenomorphs. I remember Vasquez blowing herself up to kill some more. I remember Ripley being the badass that she is. But Hudson didn't do much beside shoot a bit, complain a LOT, be scared shitless (but still going on in his mission). Hell, if anything, I'd say Gimli did a lot more in the Lord of the Rings than Hudson ever did in Aliens, and I love the character.

Gimli could have destroyed the entire Sauron army by himself, but he would continue to be a stupid character who had spent most of his time falling from horses, doing "no one toss a dwarf" jokes, trying to crawl out from under dead bodies or generally speaking awkward lines just to looks ridiculous

or ruining the tense atmosphere in the cinema during those long seconds before the beginning of one of the most impressive battle in the history of cinema.....10000 orcs about to assault a fortress, the tension was increasing.....few moments and it would begin 40 mins of endless carnage.....and then i see Gimli trying to jump to see behind the wall because he was too short.....i mean, what the fuck?

I figured Gimli didn't get as much action as Legolas due to technical reasons. Seems a lot easier to do action scenes with a normal-sized person than with someone who is supposed to be so much smaller. It already took lots of camera trickery and CGI to make the dwarves and hobbits appear so small, I can't imagine they wanted to deal with that too much during action scenes. So we get Legolas running around being all badass, and we just get close-ups of Gimli swinging his axe mostly.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle the dwarf army squaring off against the larger men, orcs, and elves during the Battle of 5 armies.

In any situation hicks is fighting so is hudson. Hudson dies in a berserker fury killing aliens. So while he snivels and whines alot hes most definitely portrayed as a soldier. Gimli's martial prowess is downplayed at every encounter. 90% of his screen time is dedicated to him whining or making himself look like a moron. Legolas scales a fucking 10 story oliphant slaying it single handedly and dismounts.

Ya we get it pretty boy elves are agile. If you think his screentime was to do an honest portrayal of elves and not to pander to faggots you are mistaken.

EDIT: As to the CGI factor. Most of legolas ninja scenes are 100% CGI.

Well obviously, I'm aware of that. It just always struck me that seeing a normal-sized CGI elf running around fighting other normal-sized people looked a hell of a lot less ridiculous than a CGI dwarf chopping big people at the knees. It would just look kind of stupid. That's why I'm curious to see how the Battle of Five Armies will turn out.

Even if you discount the CGI scenes of both characters and just focus on close-ups, it's way easier to make an elf archer like Legolas look badass than Gimli. Since he uses an axe you're pretty much required to show a lot of melee fighting, which means matching a short dwarf with normal-sized people. Legolas can look badass by firing off lots of trick shots, not to mention easily show his melee fighting without the use of CGI or camera tricks.

Only 2 fighting scenes in the movie involving gimli has the opponents being man sized enemies. All the rest they are fighting dwarf sized goblins. If anything gimli is bigger than the goblins.
