I am a huge fan of keeping consistency in regards to vision and interpretation. I would have rathered seen Peter Jackson stay on board but, i'm sure it can still be done well. I hope they are very choosy in who they pick. Eventhough I enjoyed the X-Men 3 movie, I still think it suffered a loss from changing directors and not remaining consistent to the story.

Does anyone else have serious doubts about the film incarnation of The Hobbit?

Don't get me wrong, it's a great story and all, but if you look at the other three movies, dwarves (Gimli) are used almost exclusively for comic relief.

The Hobbit is a story about the dwarves.

Would people unfamiliar with the books even be able to take it seriously, or would it just be an "lolz look at the funny little mangs" kind of thing?

The Hobbit is a much light hearted story than LOTR ever was. While I don't expect it to be wall-to-wall midget jokes like almost every scene Gimli was in, there will probably be a few. Otherwise, I expect no one will really notice since Bilbo and the dwarfs end up travelling basically by themselves most of the time. No one really noticed Frodo, Sam, or Gollum's height when they aren't standing next to a normal-sized person or something.

It starts out very light hearted, because Tolkien started writing it as a children's story. But by the time the last third of the book rolls around, it's no longer a children's story really. What with five armies fighting each other, main characters being killed, and so on.

I'd like to see Uwe Boll do it. I think he is one of the few directors in the world that could really recreate the feeling of Middle Earth.

The Hobbit is also more lighthearted, because, as Tolkien said before, it was written from Bilbo's perspective. Hell, in one of the extra side books of Tolkien stuff, Gandalf is even quoted to have said "If I would have written the There and Back Again, rather than Bilbo, it would have sounded a bit different."

LOTOR was from Frodo's PoV, so it sounded different. Just one of the many glorious things from Tolkien.

The animated hobbit movie is really quite good, you should check it out if you haven't. It has slight continuity problems but it's worth it.

Not to mention one of my favorite sountracks

Hmm..

That *rupture* with what people know from the LoTR movies will happen alot I suppose if "The Hobbit" is even halfway faithful.

Take the Wargs from Two Towers and have them have a conversation on how stupid Orks are?

Take the Trolls and have them punch each other because of a phony trick unitl they turn to stone?

Fact is, that the LoTR Movies are quite a bit darker than the LoTR Books and the LoTR Books are quite a bit darker than The Hobbit.

What does that all mean? Well, the alienation between "Fans of the Book" and "Fans of the Movie" we've already seen when the LoTR Movies were shown, will come back with a vengance once the Hobbit is out... be prepared for the flame-wars of the century!

Seems like a lot of the heavy hitters are getting behind Jackson to do the Hobbit movie. Here's hoping they can make it happen.

Tom Bombadil needs to make an appearance if this flick is to be made.

If they really wanted to, they might be able to show a bit of how they threw Sauron out of his house the first time. I believe that was briefly mentioned in The Hobbit, wasn't it?

Ahh, nostalgia...

For Peter Jackson's sake, I think he should make this movie. It's not as if he's got anything else very impressive on his plate (the script for "Halo," which he's producing but not directing, reads like a high-budget Uwe Boll trainwreck). There was a rumor going around awhile back that he was thinking about doing a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie, but I'm not sure if that has fallen apart or not.

Bottom line: he needs to get back to his bread and butter.

Why? I haven't read the books in a very long time, but wasn't he a very minor character? What role did he play that warrants him being in the movie?
