| I can't believe how much information there is about the world of Middle-Earth and all the characters that you never see in the main books. The amount of time he put into his world is really amazing. I have only read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy but looking at that wikipedia link I can see that I have barely touched the surface of everything there is to know about Middle-Earth heh. Guy was truely amazing. |

It also reinforces my hatred of Liv Tyler for replacing Glorfindl, who is like so fucking awesome it hurts. | |

| I actually found the Silmarillion and some of the other history books quite interesting...you're definitely right about the war of the ring being a fucking joke though. how about that wolf who bit off whats-his-name's hand with the silmaril in it? oh damn...i may have to reread that book |

+65 Internets | It was interesting, but the same way a dry history book can be interesting. There's very little dialogue or narrative to it. I didn't mean to imply that was necessarily a bad thing. |

| Well, but (some) men live rather long in Middle Earth. Aragorn with his first-age blood was closing in on 90 when he joined the Fellowship of the Ring IRC.

Anyway I remember enjoying "The story of the Children of Hurin" and "The lay of Luthien". There's some majorly fucked up stuff there. I don't understand how he managed to write only four books in such a huge period of time, with such a rich world to write in. Do you really have to rewrite eveything and give up half way though that many times? :S

+10 Internets | True, but IIRC very few men of Númenor descent still exist in Middle Earth by that time. I mean hell, Aragorn lived to be 210. |

| Same. I could have sworn the consensus was that there were two Glorfindels when I read about it a few years ago, but, apparently in notes he wrote when he was really old, he reconciled it by saying they were the same character (although it was originally an accident). |

| Btw, I don't really see a prob with Bilbo being played by the same actor - he looked about right in the 'flashback' when he found the ring, and he hasn't aged much since receiving it, so it wouldn't be hard to imagine he looks very close to how he does in LOTR. Like someone said - he looked like the living dead after giving it away and losing its effect ;p. Really is stupid that New Line tried to fuck so many people over in profits, really hope this doesn't get cancelled. And on that same lamenting vein, why the fuck can't Jackson just fully direct this shit bleh. He has some other project he's pursuing instead or something right? |
