You really think people would leave that part 1 you listed happy though?

Jesus, Kill Bill was one of the most overrated series I have ever seen.

I was thoroughly entertained by the fight scene. Worth the price of admission for me.

did you really feel happy at the end of the first LotR? "Oh hey, Boromir's dead, 2 hobbits just went fucking AWOL and the other gay pair just got snagged by super-orcs... SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!"

I'm really not a fan of them trying to split it into 2 movies. It just reeks of trying to cash in for maximum $$$, and that never ends well as far as the quality of the movie is concerned.

If they really have to do 2, I'd prefer they did the hobbit in one, and then do some other 'sequal' strung together from various pieces of tolkiens writing. That way they can do the Hobbit well, and if the sequal sucks we can all just pretend it doesn't exist.

Cautiously optimistic I guess?

I was actually, probably because I went in with expectations that FotR the novel had a horrible ending and was happy they added Borimir to get some little bit of closure. That wasn't my point however, despite the ending, FotR was still 3 hours, it was still more than worth the ticket. I doubt they are going to be bare boning the Hobbit and splitting it into two 2 hour flicks, if they do split it we'll be getting "extra" stuff that Tolkien didn't include, or a Hobbit movie and then a completely new Middle Earth adventure.

Either way, purists are going to be pissed so everyone get ready for the bitching.

I don't care if 3/4 of the second movie is Ian McKellen sitting down and reading the Hobbit to the audience, if they could somehow get 2 more 4 hour extended editions out of the Hobbit and any other Middle Earth trivia in between I would be able to die happy.

it's either a split Like that if they do not cover Extra stuff...OR a bit of tweaking they could get it down to a 3hr single movie, but they have Said 2 hobbit movies. and honestly the capture by the elves- would be The Perfect Place to end Part 1. it is around the middle of the book, it is a nice break in the story, and it leads up to a perfectly setup Part II.

I think two movies based on the Hobbit alone would be the best option. For all intents and purposes, they are going to have to make up a lot of the stuff that happens in between the Hobbit and the Fellowship if they intend to make that the entire second movie. At least by splitting the Hobbit story into two movies, they will have source material to refer too. They can also stretch out the battle of the five armies since in the book we miss most of the actual battle.

The two scenes that I really want as much time possible dedicated to them are when Bilbo first finds the ring and then runs into Gollum and then the first meeting of Smaug and Bilbo and their ensuing conversation. These are hands down my favorite two parts of the book. With the right actors, these will easily be the best part of the movie(s).

I think it would be possible to split the Hobbit into 2 movies on its own...but if they do add in some stuff from the gap between Hobbit and LoTR the story of Gandalf expelling the necromancer (Sauron) from Mirkwood could easily be a main plot for a sequal.

I really hope they can figure out a way to de-age Ian Holm for the role.

The book isn't being split into two movies.

The first movie is the book, the second movie will be based on material pulled from multiple sources (some unpublished) and will bridge the gap between the Hobbit and the first book of LotR.

Quote:
The Hobbit WILL BE a two part film - but here is the new information - the second film will be influenced by the foundation of "The Silmarillion" and "The History of Middle-earth Series" (which is a 12 part series of books where JRR's son, Christopher Tolkien analyses JRR's old manuscripts; the manuscripts that ultimately led to become "The Silmarillion", "Lord of the Rings" and "Númenor" which is sort of like Atlantis). The second movie will ultimately lead us up to creation of The Fellowship in a graceful and logical fashion! So for all of you out there that thought that "The Hobbit" is too short a story for two feature movies (let alone two Peter Jackson feature movies) then you were right. Before you ask, my source has reminded me that PJ has access to the JRR manuscripts and extensive notes as he did for the LOTR trilogy. These notes were the foundation for the two books mentioned above, but are not the books themselves (which are still in the Tolkien family's hands). I mention the books to better frame what he has in mind. Jackson borrowed from Tolkien's notes for LOTR to build the story he wanted. He will do so again for The Hobbit.
