| They just have to. Makeup and CG can make them look young, but their voices are literally one of a kind. Jackson would be a fool to not ask the two to return.

| The battle of the five armies lasted only 1 or 2 chapoters. gonna be tough to stretch that into 2 hours. What i guess they can do in the first film is stretch out the journey up to escaping the elves. highlighting the goblin kidnapping and expanding that whole time under the ground. can easily get 3 hours out of that, the riddles , the escape, the wargs, the eagles, beorn and the capture and escape from the mnirkwood elves. the second movie would be laketown, the trek to smaug then the war and finally the return home. thats a lot of stuff. |

| Hmm, most excellent. Like others are thinking, I don't know how the hell they could possibly out do the first trilogy. Though I'm not sure 7 years is enough time in between to let the craze from RotK die out before hitting us again.

i asssume they wouldn't be making two hobbit movies, even if the 2nd one is labeled as a sequel, without some sort of cliffhanger at the end of part one. the end of the hobbit is 'all wrapped up in a neat little package'. therefore i also assume they will include the end of the hobbit in the 2nd film. maybe call the first film 'there...' and the 2nd film '...aaaaand back again.'

+8 Internets | Fellowship of the Rings: 178 minutes / 208 minutes extended edition Two Towers: 179 minutes / 223 minutes extended edition Return of the King: 201 minutes / 251 minutes extended edition If Return of the King proved anything, they could easily make the first movie three or more hours to fit it all in. If not, I think there is plenty of content to have the first movie end when the party is captured by the wood elves. Then the second movie could cover from there on. Since in the book we don't "see" the entire battle of the five armies, they could extend that part for the movie. If they don't choose to do this, they have plenty of history to work from to make a sequel. It won't be nearly as good due to the lack of a book, but it could still kick all kinds of ass. Christopher Lee could come back as Saruman and we could follow his fall to darkness. Gandalf looked old as hell in the LoTRs movies, so not much makeup would be needed. Ian Holm would only have to look like he did in the first movie, because remember he looked like he "hadn't aged a day". My only fear is that I will have such utterly high hopes for this movie, it won't be possible to live up to them. To be honest, The Hobbit (1977) (TV) wasn't all that bad. If you haven't read the book, even though I highly recommend you do, you could always watch that.

| lol since when did the Hobbit have a sequel? The Hobbit is one of my favorite stories, way better than LOTR. And if Jackson is just a producer and not a director I am still a bit worried. The Hobbit has some great stuff in it. I can't wait to see Smog.

+16 Internets | While I'm excited that Peter Jackson is on board and this is finally going to be made.....I am highly dubious that they are gonna try to find 2 movies out of it. Lets face it, The Hobbit was written as a children's book. Not knocking it or anything, but I've read that book in one sitting before. The Simarillion isn't a childs book by any stretch, but that one also isn't really a novel in the traditional sense either. I am just worried that they are going for 2 movies instead of 1 to double the revenue....as opposed to doing 2 movies because the content demands 2 movies. I'd be more excited about 1 three-hour movie than 2 shorter ones. |

| I agree with you and have the same fear. They better not fuck up the Hobbit.

So, assuming that holds true, I imagine they will be involved.

+8 Internets | I remember reading that Ian McKellen said he wanted to return to play Gandalf if Jackson was directing. Not sure if he would return if Jackson only produced. I don't remember reading anything about Ian Holm though. |

I would like some parts to be longer, but with those time constraints, that's spot on.
