| ok, I'm really a kung fu newbie and I'm looking to get some of these on dvd's and really don't know what to look for. I'm sure there must be some *must have* types of this genre, but i sure as shit don't know what they are. I did see a 3 pack of sonny chiba(sp) - had like 6 or 8 movies on 3 dvd's - i was thinking about starting with that. I don't care if they're subtitled any suggestions? thx

| you basicaly take every Hong Kong Action Movie with MIchelle Yeoh or Jet Li or Jacky Chan before they were perverted by Hollywood. Once Upon a Time in China 1 to 3 are good examples Fist of Legend - Awsome movie! Diffent take on the same story as the Bruce Lee Movie Shanghai Connection (I think that was the name) Tai Chi - My favorite kung fu movie. Michelle Yoeh AND Jet Li. Wow! Drunken Master 2 - One of Jacky Chans best movies ever! Bodyguard from Peking - Skip 1 hour and 20 minutes and witness one of the most badass kung fu showdowns ever. My Father is a Hero - Cool bitter Jet Li movie with wacky stunts and a badass kid. Lone Wolf and Cup 1-6 - Old 70's japanese katana slasher series. The Shogun kicks out his executioner and he then travels the land as assassin with his little kid in a babykart. Recently Jet Li made The One - I was very suprised that bullshit hollywood finaly pulled their thumbs out of their collective asses and made a movie where you can actually SEE Jet Li fight without having 222 cuts in every scene and close-ups of his nose. And all the old Jacky Chan movies starring Jacky Chan, Samo Hung and Yuen Biao. You can pick any of them, they all rock. I am sure i left something out, but that should give ya a good start and GOOD Hong Kong Movies. One of the funny thing about Hong Kong movie experience is it to dig through a heap pile of crap to find the pearls ![]() |

I agree with a lot of your picks, but I think your first statement is a little out of touch. Personally I don't go in to any Jackie Chan movie (as an example) looking for deep story. And keep in mind I'm talking about his older stuff here, not the newer american movies. I go in to it for the action, and if it has a story to go along with it, then hey, that's a bonus. I don't look at all martial arts movies this way, I'm just saying on a general basis, when I hear about a Jackie Chan or Michelle Yeow movie I don't think, "oh LORD INC great story!" I wonder what kind of fights they get in. Oh well, to each their own. ![]() btw I still haven't seen any of the Once Upon a Time in Chin series yet. Is it really worth all the talk I hear about it? Opinions please! Edit: spelling (spelled his name Chain twice argh)

| Kiss of the Dragon I found Kiss of the Dragon to be a very decent Kung Fu movie. The editing was a little on the choppy side and the Bridget Fonda subplot was rather awkward, but it delivered on the Kung Fu fighting. Jet Li's other movie, Romeo Must Die, didn't have any kung fu . It was a total waste of effort. They set up this big rivalry between the ghetto blacks and Chinese, and there was no payoff. I really wanted to see blacks and orientals in an all out kung fu rumble. |

+2 Internets | So far, NONE of Jet Li's American films have been any good. He had a so-so fight in Lethal Weapon 4 (so-so compared to his older stuff at least) and The One was downright horrible.

| Yes, Jets american movies have been very disappointing. Watch the Once Upon a Time in China series, Fist of Legend and the classic Shaolin Temple for some good Jet Li action. Jackies older movies are great to start with as well, Snake in Eagles Shadow, Drunken Master etc as well as Wheels on Meals(Good fights) and after you have seen the most popular Jet Li and Jackie Chan movies and seen their fighting styles they've used in their movies, dont forget to watch some good Donnie Yen movies as well. Drunken Taichi(Good Starter for Donnie) Hero Among Heroes Iron Monkey - The fights in Tiger Cage 2 and Above the Law 4 with Donnie as good as well. You will notice that the fightingmoves Jet, Jackie and Donnie use in their movies are very different. Also watch the old 70's Hong Kong Shaw Brothers flicks with The Five Venoms! - Purchase these three golden nuggets as well Fist of Fury - Bruce Lee Way of the Dragon - Bruce Lee - For some good Female action, check out Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in the Above the Law series.

| Duel to the Death! You MUST see Duel to the Death! The BEST ninja movie ever. This has to be the movie that inspired the guy to make the real ultimate power page. Be amazed as you watch a chinese warrior walk on the beach only to find out hundreds of ninjas on kites have been trailing him, or when the giant ninja ambushes a chinese monk and then splits into 4 nomal sized ninjas. It all climaxes when the head ninja gets his head cut off by the main character, gets it impaled on a small branch and still manages to blurt out "I feel no pain" before his head explodes. After seeing this movie I accept that ninjas are the greatest power in the universe.

| If you like Kung Fu Check out some of the best gun fighter action movies ever made. The Killer Hard Boiled A better tomorrow I and II These movies make anything done in America look like crap. The most suprising thing about these action movies is that most of them have a pretty good plot. It's like a killing drama. For Kung Fu you must see the best Kung Fu movie ever.....Enter The Dragon. Also check out Dragon the Bruce Lee story. It's packed full of action and is based off the life of Bruce Lee. DO NOT SEE Kung Pow - Enter the fist. This movie was so horrable. I thought it would be good to see a spoof of kung fu movies but it pretty much sucked. Save for the fight with the cow. Also see Twin Warriors. It's a little campy but the kung fu is good. A little too much on the wire works, but still a great movie. That's about it....you pretty much have to find out what kind of Kung fu you like and go from there. |

[/quote] Yeah I just recently watched it again, in fact i have it right here on my notebook. Every fight in Tai Chi is at least as good if not better then the fights in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The problem with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is, that it was the only Hong Kong movie that got pushed from America. Movies like that have existed for years.
