| Riddle me this: What kinda of idiot attacks with an overhead chop to a prepared defender? It is a long, weak and slow strike, especially when you move with its momentum. And please note the fact that the first block was not a block, it was crap. This is what we call in the sword duelists book of errors "limp wrist technique" (Yes, it is called that) Props to the fact that it was over quickly, but frankly I would place my money on the English Crusader over the Samurai anyday. Good swords, stupid fighters (Excepting few. Ex: Musashi) One other piece of critism. Not nearly enough footplay to even come close to qualifying for a 'decent' sword duel. |

| Older, extremely difficult to find movie, called simply "The Fencing Master" Couldn't tell ya who's in it anymore, but if you're into extremely good, realistic sword fights, there it is. Good luck locating it though =) As a fencer myself (NOT olympic thank you very much ) I can say, with reasonable authority, that most movie swordfights really really blow. Sure they're fun to watch, but you get looked at really strange in the theatre when you're yelling things like "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!! HE'S WIDE OPEN!! STOP THRUST STOP THRUST YOU USELESS FUCK!"Oh, and 'The Musketeer' was the absolute worst piece of shit ever to be spawned from Dumas' classics.. They were such good books too.. and the best renditions are still old black and white silent films with narration dubbed over top. I'm sorry, French Cavaliers with rapiers should NOT be fighting like hong kong kung fu experts... But hey, it's all fun and games till someone looses an eye =) Regards, Fin

| Well, I've trained in Epee and Sabre, as well as my preference, which is traditional Rapier, (Straight, or Italian Grip). No points, everything is a valid target. Going full speed with no protective equipment is quite the way to develop tip control =) My current weapon is a 34" (blade, 40" tip to pommel) oval schlager with a really nice stainless wire broadsword guard. The weight of the guard makes the blade almost feather light, and allows for amazing control. Also, I find fighting against people with 42" blades is good for practice as well, though they are rather easy to beat out of line.. A friend of mine trained in olympic foil. I still make fun of him.. the thing is more like a whip than a sword In all seriousness, if you haven't seen it, try to track down 'the fencing master'.. If I can find it here, I'll see about posting clips. Regards, Fin

| Hahahah!! Damn, that's good.. I wasn't even thinking about that when I posted.. which is strange as my mind is normally firmly entrenched in the gutter.. That is about the best example of quoting out of context I've ever seen.. You get a cookie for that! Regards, Fin *Edit* Searyx, I thought the Rob Roy fight kicked much ass. It's one of the very few movies I liked enough to buy on DVD. (I'm very very picky) Rather accurately depicted how, while the celts were a fearsome force on the battlefield, all naked, and painted blue, they weren't all that proficient at one on one combat. Add to that, the fact that, in a relatively open area, like that in which they fought, someone well trained with a rapier WOULD in fact, absolutely destroy someone wielding a broadsword, and it becomes one of my favorite fights as well. I've also tried the last scene with my sword, and though it isn't sharp, so it hurt much less, it can be grabbed such that the wielder can't do anything with it, so the final part gets full marks for realism from me. I'm also partial to Liam Neeson but that's just me..

| theres a pretty wide gap between best "realistic" sword fight and best "fantasy" sword fight. personally i think id get kinda bored if every fight scene in a movie followed the path of realism. anyway, crouching tiger hidden dragon gets my vote. i dont even sit through the whole movie anymore, i just fast forward to the fight scenes. id also like to say that i think dubbing this film hurt it more than helped it; when i saw it in the theater with subtitles i was immersed in the fantasy world but when i watched it on DVD with my friends and the goofy over dub it just broke the entire fantasy for me. |

| Kaylum, I totally agree.. I'm not saying that every unrealistic swordfight is crap. In fact, I absolutely loved the CTHD fights. That movie ranks right up there on my favorites list as well. It's just that, as a swordfighter myself, I appreciate when a movie goes the extra distance to be somewhat realistic. The off the wall martial arts stuff is great in an oriental themed movie, but is way out of place in a movie about French Cavaliers. Regards, Fin
