The scariest movies I have seen are the ones that astro recommends. (note none of those are on his list.)

And yes, The Thing wins.

yep i knew there was an old thread asking for scary movies. this thread is a top 10 list. not so much as a list of everything. small difference, but big enough to have it ignored by everyone but the trolls. nm

Only thing I don't agree with on your list is Night of the Scarecrow at number 2? the fuck....

Not sure how a horrible ass movie like that makes it into any list, tbh.
100% agree on The Thing though.

To be honest i blanked on number 2 so i thought of really creepy movies i had seen as a kid and for some reason night of the scarecrow popped up. that movie isnt that bad. i saw it again 10 years ago and it still holds up. how many movies do you see where the bad guys are horribly killed by the ghost of a retard embodied in the form of a scarecrow? i can replace number 2 with american werewolf in london. hows that?

I just watched mystery meat train the other day. Terrible movie, but I really like the way that they shot it. It was a weird movie that seemed to have good cinematography, and a terrible script.

I think you mean Midnight Meat Train. I saw that a week ago on Fearnet. Agree with your comments about it. Seen worse movies on there for sure though.

I won't comment on the Top 10 of All Time, but I will list some of my favorites:

The Amityville Horror(1979)

John Carpenter's the Thing

Alien

Day of the Dead (I love zombie movies, and Romero's are the best, but Day is really the only one of his series that I would personally consider to be true horror)

28 Days Later

The Shining (Kubrick)

The Exorcist

The Ring (#1)

The Grudge (#1, my only regret is that you have to wait for the sequel to see Sarah finally get killed)

and the Dawn of the Dead remake. The first ten-fifteen minutes of that are probably the most effective of any horror movie that I've yet seen, and really hit home as what I would consider to be an accurate portrayal of a real zombie outbreak.

I prefer psychological horror above all else...

1. JC's The Thing

---huge gap before 2-10 in no particular order---

A Tale of Two Sisters
Jacob's Ladder
The Shining
Session 9
Alien
Event Horizon
Hellraiser
The Exorcist
In the Mouth of Madness

The Descent and The Mist are the only two recent 'contenders' I'd even consider for the list.

I consider Horror things that actually scare me, not gorefests.

Alien scarier then all.

It's a truly great horror movie that provides both those things.

Better, but I would have put something like "In the Mouth of Madness" in that spot. Or for a more recent film, as far splatter films go FEAST or something like that.

But Werewolf in London is a decent movie.

Also, not sure about anyone else... but the trailers for the new Friday the 13th look really good.

Sad that no one really mentions the remake of The Blob, that movie was always pretty scary for me. Some of the views of the victims in it are pretty harsh.
