So yes, on a psychiatrist-level sort of thing your argument may hold, but for practical purposes, it is Batman who wears a black mask over the face of Bruce Wayne and changes his voice to not be recognized. So the physical disguise (along with the voice) is Batman.

Or do you really think the gravel voice is real physical voice of Wayne/Batman and he just tries really, really hard to talk like a normal person 99% of his time?

In the comics, he breaks Batman's back. Batman is paralyzed and basically is retired for quite some time. Bane is the only person to flat out own Batman in a fight.

Did you ever read the comic? For years, Batman has tried to shed the Bruce Wayne persona. If it wasn't for Alfred, or Robin convincing him to have some semblance of a personal life, he'd be Batman 100% of the time.

Its been like this in the Batman comic book for the last 20 years. Batman sees a personal life as unnecessary.

The writers have explicitly stated that this is the way Batman is. He is different from any other hero in that he doesn't care for having a personal life. He's probably the only hero whose personal life is the sham; he's Batman through and through.

Finally managed to get out and see it; there were literally only two scenes where I thought, "that's Heath Ledger" and even then, it was only for the briefest second. To be honest, these days what passes for acting is Tom Cruise as Tom Cruise in whatever the fuck the studios are pushing, or Bruce Willis as Bruce Wills in Action Movie 6. I cannot offhand think of a role where someone so transformed themselves into someone else that they were that unrecognizable.

The "you complete me" line was genius, as was the ending monologue he gives where tells Bats they're going to be doing this for a long time to come.

Oh, pencil trick got big laughs as did Nurse Joker. Theatre was packed too, 3:30 showing on a Sunday, never seen a matinee so full.

Only person I can think of who could maybe do the Joker after this is Johnny Depp. Not sure who they can follow up with. Catwoman isn't a strong enough character or villianous enough to carry a movie. Bane is too unknown. Riddler, maybe but they'd have to do a pretty astounding job to make him work, and his MO / style might be a little too close to the Joker's.

Or even watch Batman Begins? Wayne totally shed his life as a billionaire inheritor to go fuck around in a Chinese prison camp to learn about criminals. He was obsessed with revenge on his parents murder. When he returned to Wayne Manor, he didn't start going out and fucking supermodels every night, he started trying to destroy the corrupt systems of Gotham. Alfred basically forced to him start putting up appearances as a billionaire - without Alfred he would have certainly given in completely to the Batman persona.
