Were you as blown away by this scene as I was? I was lucky, as I had not finished reading the books when I watched this scene, so I didn't know whether Gandalf would come back or not.

I really liked how they did him the movie, but a friend of mine who is super into fantasy vehemently hates it for some reason. Says something about how he liked the illustration on the front of one of his books, I can't remember which or who it was by offhand.

Hell, I love every part of that movie, cept for two parts: the useless part where Arwen gives up her immortality (okay, so it will probably be important later on, but I really resent how they increased her role in the story, I could care less if the story is centered entirely on men), and the part where Galadriel is tempted by the ring. I just thought the special effects and the way they made her voice sound there was really cheesey. And the impression I got from the book when reading it wasn't that she got all loud when saying those lines, it just seemed like a lecture to me. Whatever though.

There is one scene in the movie that felt wrong to me, and that was right after the Nine were blown away by the river.

Arwen kneels down before Frodo and starts crying. This felt totally wrong to me. Arwen doesn't know anything about Frodo, except that he's a Ring Bearer. Why does she care so much that she's crying? Also, as logical as Elves often are (nearly immortal beings are like that

) it seemed unlikely that she'd spend so many precious seconds shouting and crying when what she SHOULD be doing is getting the little shit back on the horse and on his way to Rivendell.

It's 50/50 for me. Explanation:

I liked how they made the balrog to become a very dangerous creature. How the fellowship is trapped by all the orcs, hundreds of them, bloodthirsty and with hate and death in their eyes. Then of a sudden, you hear the footsteps of the balrog and they all flee.

That shows it's a powerful creature, it's a being of devious matters. They run from it and when it finally reveals itself visually I like it too. The graphics and mystery about it - it's all good. Flames, burning, the dust and shadowy graphics.

What I dislike and what destroys most of it is the allout plat scene with Gandalf "fighting" it. No real magic, no effects, nothing. "You shall not pass!" simply hang out of my throat after that. I expected some hardcore wizardry and finally he died with the balrog with him or somewhat, but he was just flashing his stupid stick around making faces.

two things wrong with what you said searyx. first, if you were to read the hobbit and the lotr books, they explain that elves find out about anything and everything "as fast as the water travels". also, you said, she was wasting precious seconds ? how are seconds precious to someone who lives forever.
anyhow, I thought the balrog scene was a good one.

I think he meant precious seconds seeing how Frodo was dying.

Gandalf doesn't fight it on the bridge in the book, either. The Balrog brings its sword down on Gandalf's, shattering both. That's about it.

In The Two Towers, Gandalf returns and explains the very fierce battle that ensued between he and the Balrog after their decent completed. The battle concludes with the Balrog being thrown down a chasm, bringing the mountain down with him. I hope the movie shows us some of the juicy details.

didn't Arwen hold Frodo and whisper some spells or something? something about whatever blessings protect her to protect him also? if it was to help him thru the rest of the way to Rivendell it's not wasted seconds. Sounded pretty believable to me when I watched it.

Fight with Balrog seemed pretty short for such a powerful creature, hopefully we'll see more in Two towers as Gandalf tells about it.

The Balrog looked totaly kickass and I liked the whole effect of his wings sheathed in smoke, but for anyone who has played DiabloII it seemed like a complete rip. I was expecting to see some red lightning breath at any moment.

I guess that is just the general badass demon template.

Anyways, the fight in the movie is the exact same as it is in the book; Balrog swings his sword, Gandalf blocks it, then Gandalf breaks the bridge only to be surprised, muhaha.

Gandalf shooting lightning bolts or some other cliche "wizard spell" would have gimped the movie more so (not that I didnt enjoy it, but they definately dumbed down lots of it). It's fine the way it was.

Did Tolkien draw the Balrog? If not, there was ripping being offed in both directions.

Doesn't matter if he drew it, the words could have been inspiration for the character etc etc. I wouldn't say "ripped off", but borrowed from applies.

I thought it was the most well done/accurate scene in the movie. I didn't get to see it in the theaters and I was a bit let down after getting the DVD (free thanks to a Block Buster promotion).
